Stone Free: A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix

The first album Eddie Kramer put together before Jimi's family regained control of his estate, Stone Free is made up of people who admired Jimi and his music, playing versions of his songs. Some very good interpretations, although I highly suggest skipping track 1, The Cure's version of Purple Haze. It's unrecognizable. However, after that, things settle down into a nice groove. Eric Clapton's Stone Free rocks, Buddy Guy does a kickass rendition of Red House. Body Count's Hey Joe is street gang angry. Slash and Paul Rodgers team up with Buddy Miles and Billy Cox for a cool version of I Don't Live Today. Living Colour's Crosstown Traffic is funky, more Band of Gypsys influenced than Experience'd. I came to the last track, Hey Baby (Land Of The New Rising Sun). I had no idea who M.A.C.C. was, I assumed it was some sort of rap group. I am happy to say, I was seriously wrong. M.A.C.C. is basically the core of the bands Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. They had previously recorded together under the Temple Of The Dog name. This album is worth the cost for this one track alone. Hey Baby is probably a close 2nd on my all time favorite Hendrix tracks, but M.A.C.C. take it and add a edge to it that I didn't think would work with it. It does. Get this CD, just for this one song. And enjoy the rest as a bonus :)
