Live In New York - March 17, 1968

Recorded March 17, 1968 at the Cafe A Go Go, this CD features Jimi jamming with a number of noted musicians including Paul Butterfield (harmonica), Buddy Miles (drums), Elvin Bishop (guitar), Herbie Rich (keyboards) and Marvey Brooks (bass). Sound is low, but surprisingly good on this CD, notes from the book `Electric Gypsy' show this one recorded by Jimi on his equipment, so he probably had a decent setup. Starting off with an uptempo tune (Beginning Of A Jam), the band then drops into a slow blues (Monday Jam) which features some great soloing. Jimi Jam is an early version of the song that would appear later on the Nine To The Universe release. The CD and case liner notes differ on which song comes next, but based on the style of the song, I'd say it's Swing Jimi Jam, followed by Funky Jam. Sheesh, any more "jam" and you'd want some bread to make a sandwich :) Closing this out, a version of my favorite song Little Wing, here titled Jamming Wing. Not the best version ever of the song, but still a very enjoyable listen. Overall, a very surprising and decent release, showing Jimi just having some fun with friends. ROIO of course, though this would make for a excellent release on the Dagger label.

* Note: These two tracks are shown in opposite order on the CD itself, compared to the case liner.
