Another in the official PPX recordings re-issues, Live At George's Club is volume 4 of the 6 CD set, and features Jimi with Curtis Knight and his band at a small club. Recorded on a portable tape machine, quality isn't the best, but remastering has improved it greatly.
Mostly cover songs, it does feature an early version of a little song called Drivin' South, which Jimi would redo for BBC Radio, and would subsequently be released on the Radio One and BBC Sessions CDs. The version here is less intense, but still rocking.
And though the song has always been credited to Curtis Knight, Curtis introduces the song as a Hendrix selection! The performances here I'd rate as a very good bar band. There are only hints at the greatness that would soon show in Jimi's playing.
Reading the liner notes, I had the sudden need for a real big shovel. Because the shit was really piling up from Ed Chalpin. The liner notes for this are okay, though if you believe everything that is quoted by Chalpin, he was totally responsible for Jimi's future success.
And somehow I doubt that Jimi was trying to get back with him businesswise, especially after all the legal battles between PPX and Jimi's label Reprise. I can forgive Ed, because the solution to those battles was the album Band Of Gypsys.
Bottom line? Listen and enjoy the CD, enjoy the cover artwork, but skip the notes :)
