Before I start going into details about what you might be able to do to speed up your baby, you need to know a few very basic items about engines and the way a car works... If you already know the basics, go ahead, but if not click on the link down here...
The information I am going to make available here should be pretty easy stuff... If you have already tried modifying your car before then this will sound pretty simple and you will probably know it all already... If you wanna go into Torque curves and Traction control etc etc email me =)
All engines mix in air with fuel and use that to create energy. The more air/fuel there is, the more power you can expect from the engine. Since fuel is readily available from the tank, if you increase the amount of air flowing into your engine you will mix it with more gas and get more output...
The air filters that originally come with your
vehicle are pretty restrictive. They only let a small amount of air into
the engine, and they are usually paper filters that need replacing periodically...
Performance filters help in the sense that they let more air in, and are
made of higher quality material (ie they will last and do not need replacement)...
Probably the best in the market for such filters is K&N... They have
many different filters that fit a variety of different cars, and their
installation is usually pretty simple... Such filters dont vary much in
price... They are usually between 15-30BD depending on the size and shape...
Stock systems are usually restrictive to airflow. They bottle up horsepower that can be freed with a better muffler or exhaust, or even a whole system. The best for these is Borla, and most of their equipment has a lifetime warranty. Looking for one for your car is pretty easy, just give them your car model and type and they'll give you one or two options...
A complete exhaust system consists of headers, a lot of pipes, catalytic converter (but this is only on modern cars), muffler and the tips... Other than freeing up horsepower, certain types of mufflers can be bought that give a car a 'roaring sound' as it moves down the street.... That seems to be an incentive for many people these days...
These are pretty expensive and need a lot of research before actually deciding what to put on, but the increase in your engine's output is usually more than worth it... They can usually increase output by about 50% depending on the type you use... And having a twin turbo on your car is just something else...
The basic job of a turbo or supercharger is force more air under your hood. Turbos work using the exhaust gases from your car. As the gases leave the engine they spin a fan which in turn pulls more air through the hood. In design it is quite complex but the general idea is simple. Superchargers work by spinning their own fan (using battery power to turn it).
Usually along with the turbo or supercharger there would be an intercooler... What an intercooler does is cool down the air coming into the engine, therefore being able to take in more air (As air becomes more dense when it is cooler...) All this under your hood usually looks a mess as you can see from the picture here... So it will take a lot of sorting out around your engine to get it looking neat again... =P
Looking for a turbo or supercharger that suits your car is not the easiest job in the world. There are lots of companies that make them and their prices differ according to quality, materials used, etc... Personally if you ask me I would go for a reputable name such as Vortech... Also, you need to make sure your engine can handle the extra flow otherwise it can soon fall apart...
Getting quality headers for your car can be a pretty easy was to add some extra power... Headers are placed where the exhaust gases leave the engine... (Basically they are part of the entire exhaust system). They are not too expensive, and their prices range according to the material used (ceramic, steel etc...) and whether they are for a 4 cylinder engine, 6 etc...
One thing people really love about (well I do anyway) these is the sound
they make just before changing gear at full throttle... The engine keeps
cutting and hitting back real quick before it changes... Obviously how
sweet this sounds depends on which headers you buy...
These include parts that you will need to replace periodically, such as spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor etc... Instead of buying the stock factory parts, you can tune in to a lot of other special performance companies who are specialised in such parts... For example, Autolite and Accel are in the business with some of the best performace spark plug wires... Air, gas and oil Filters can also be included in this category... Oxygen sensors, ignition, etc etc...
Fuel Injector and Rails cleaning:
After a couple of years the fuel injector and rails in a car might start
to get contaminated... This is by dirt, or low quality gas or just over
time... This can cause lots of problems in a car, like rough idling, heavy
consumption of gas, not enough power etc... Getting your fuel injector
completely cleaned can really make a dramatic change to your car, especially
if it's 5 or more years old... New cars obviously do not need such cleaning.
Any proffesional mechanic or car garage will be able to clean your injector.
Using fuel injector cleaning products and mixing them in with the gas is
also a good way to keep your injector clean.
Sometimes you might end up driving a jeep or truck, only to notice that everytime you turn on a bend in the road the whole cars feels like it's about to fall over it's side... Everything in the truck moves! Even the passenger might end up in your lap depending how bad the roll is... Well do not worry, there is a solution, and that is installing a sway bar... The idea is pretty simple, it's just a bar that is designed in a way to stop the whole truck from rolling over...
ATR makes some of the best bars around, and they
are available for most cars... Depending on your vehicle you might want
to install bars on either the front of the truck, on the back, or on both...
Some vehicles seem to have very harsh rides, while some have very smooth, sea-sick type rides... The easiest answer here (apart from re-designing the whole suspension system) is to add a set of shocks... Depending on the type you buy, they can make your ride more stiff or smoother (obviously this will depend on what car you're installing them on).
Some shocks, like the Rancho 9000's are variable,
and their stiffness/smoothness can be changed with the turn of a dial.
This is useful for example, for people who like to go off-road driving
(make the ride stiff when youre off road and make it smooth again when
your back on the road).
There... Thats all I have for now but i'll be sure to add some more info here soon...
It's usually very hard to find parts and accesories for your car here in the Arabian Gulf. What I do is order them from Carparts. The parts are shipped quickly, and their prices are very reasonable. Even for some of the accessories that are available here, I usually find much cheaper at carparts. Try them out!
