Interview with Dicky Barrett from Earwig Magazine(edited)
EARWIG: The Bosstones have had some pretty major success over the past couple of years, between Lollapalooza in '95 and your appearance in the movie Clueless.
DICKY: Thank you for noticing! That was really great, considering the number of bands that were invited to Lollapalooza; it felt great to be included in a group like that. Then we were also on the Warped tour this summer.
EARWIG: What was it like being in Clueless?
DICKY: It was fun; it wasn't hard at all. We just played ourselves, and we were just perfect for the role.
EARWIG: Were you happy with the end result.
DICKY: It wasn't that bad; I think it could have been much worse. I've seen bands look really dumb in movies. I don't think we looked really dumb; just kind of dumb. I was happy. We got a lot of time, and as for the movie, kids seem to really like it . . . It didn't suck.
EARWIG: Boston has always had a strong foothold in the music industry, but it seems to me Hollywood has been showing a major surge of interest in Boston bands over the past couple of years. Why is that?
DICKY: I think it's kind of natural because with Boston, if you're doing music, you're doing music. You're not there because it's a stepping stone; you're not thinking, 'Oh, then I might be an actor; then I might produce movies or something. I think the people who do music are really serious about it. So when you want real bands, that's where you go.
EARWIG: Yeah, but it's a good kind of jaded. Do you ever expect to leave Boston?
DICKY: I don't think I could. I've seen everything else. I'm not planning to go anywhere soon.
EARWIG: So what's on tap for the Bosstones?
DICKY: We're finishing mixing our fourth full-length record and I'm as pleased with this as anything in my life.
EARWIG: Got a title yet?
DICKY: I think we're going to call it Let's Face It. It'll be released this coming February.
