BROMLEY 3 THAMESMEAD TOWN 0 – FA CUP 2ND QUAL RD. 02/10/04
There’s something about FA Cup games, Andy Legg and farces involving Bromley. With only one fit centre back available we looked vulnerable to join Worthing on the list of Mead’s giant killings, but although we struggled to break them down in the first half, once they had keeper Smith sent off the game was over and it moved into farce once replacement keeper Clews was also ordered off!
The first half saw Bromley have the majority of the ball, but they made it really hard for themselves by over playing and trying to be too clever. There were plenty of tackles flying in from the Kent Leaguers and both Watson and Arkwright were injured. It was tough going on the pitch and not much better to watch. Andy Legg’s over fussy refereeing style made sure the game never really got going and Bromley seemed to have lost their way in the windy conditions. Then in injury time Paul Kember played in Huggins on the edge of the box and Leroy held off the defender to beat Smith from 15 yards. 1-0 at half time and a sigh of relief.
The second half was pretty wayward until on 58 mins a free kick came to Arkwright in the six yard box and as he beat Smith to the ball the keeper brought him down. Mr Legg rightly awarded a penalty, but then ridiculously showed Smith the red card! Taiwo hammered the spot kick past replacement keeper Jason Clews for 2-0. Amoako replaced the lack lustre Watson up front and he was to cause Mead real problems. On 67 mins Amoako sped past the Thamesmead defence and Clews rushed out from his goal and flattened Adolph outside the box. Mr Legg had no option this time but to show Clews his second yellow card and send him off. Thamesmead brought on a sub to take up the keeping duties, but he was barely troubled for the remainder of the game. Bromley over played and frustrated the goal hungry crowd, with only Taiwo and Luckett going close. In injury time Amoako once again ran free of the stretched defence and this time he walked the ball round the keeper to make it 3-0. The game finally came to a halt in an atmosphere of embarrassment rather than celebration. Fair play to Thamesmead who never stopped trying.
