EPSOM & EWELL 1 BROMLEY 1 – LEAGUE 06/12/03
As the five of us travelled home in Sven’s car there was a stunned silence for the majority of the journey. We had literally been struck speechless by the ineptitude of the Bromley display this afternoon. We had just witnessed a dreadful 1-1 draw and if Epsom had actually believed in themselves they could have won the game!
The game started brightly enough and Bromley played some nice approach play without threatening the goal too much. Amoako went closest but his effort was stopped by young keeper Sargeant. The Ravens broke the deadlock on 14 mins when Amoako’s through ball was met by Reid who lifted the ball over the advancing keeper and as the ball rolled in, he took time to pose for a photo in front of the fans! We should have gone on to slaughter a very poor Epsom who clearly lacked confidence, but it didn’t happen and on 43 mins to the stunned silence of the whole ground Buckley struck a 40 yard effort past a static Danny Harwood for 1-1. Everyone went in at the break with an awful feeling that this was going to be another glorious Bromley failure.
The second half was a familiar story of Bromley having loads of possession without ever really troubling the keeper. Dead balls went astray, passes misplaced and ideas ran short. The closest we came was a Reid header, which hit the post from a Luckett free kick. Sargeant couldn’t keep a goal kick on the pitch and Epsom just couldn’t cross the half way line for the most part, a little adventure from them may have been enough to have got their first home win of the season. Late on Epsom had a chance to win the game, but faced with a one on one the striker hit the side netting. Things have to change or this club is finished.
Quote for the game: ‘You could have stood on the bank and saved yourself a fiver. You could have stayed at home and saved yourself a day!’
