Metropolitan Police 1 – 3 Bromley – Ryman League Division One South – 7/2/04 – Match report by Will
On a crisp Spring afternoon in Surrey the Ravens finally managed to defeat what has become somewhat of a bogey team recently, overcoming a somewhat mediocre Met Police outfit with an element of comfort, and at the same time propel themselves to their third successive league win since McIntyre’s return.
However it was not all plain sailing, as the home side took the lead after only 47 seconds, with most Bromley fans not yet behind the goal!! Bromley lost possession in midfield and a cross from the left by Bennetts was flicked past Harwood by Symon James.
However, this shocked the Ravens into life, and they equalised five minutes later. The imposing Wade Falana won a header in midfield and the ball fell to Hammond whose right wing cross was prodded in by the ever-sharp Adolf Amoako. The same few players were involved after a quarter of an hour when Bromley took the lead. A free kick from the left involving Luckett and Hammond was knocked down by Falana and Amoako volleyed the ball into the ground and over Mackenzie for 2-1, to the delight of the hardy few behind the goal.
From then on Bromley dominated the proceedings and were unlucky not to further the lead when Hammond was felled just inside the area, only for the referee to give a free kick which Luckett blazed over. Bromley, however, opened up a two goal lead on the stroke of half-time, when a Jason McKoy cross was spilled by Mackenzie, and this uncharacteristic error was pounced upon by Falana who volleyed the loose ball in from close range.
The second half saw a lot of approach play, mainly by the home side, but with no real goalscoring opportunities. Notwithstanding a couple of goalmouth scrambles at the back, the Police never looked like threatening a comeback, but Bromley never looked like extending their lead, with Gary Drewett spurning the best chance, blazing over from 10 yards when unmarked. The final whistle was greeted with delight by the Bromley fans.
Quote for the game: “They don’t deserve to play at a ground like this!”
