NEWPORT IOW 1 BROMLEY 1 – LEAGUE 19/02/05

Bromley travelled over the sea to the Isle of Wight and put on a great display for their large travelling support. Everyone concerned with Bromley will wonder just how we didn’t win the game.

George Wakeling received a blow to his plans when Adrian Stone aggravated his hamstring injury during the warm up and he quickly had to change his formation. We started playing 5-3-2 and after an even spell of play Bromley really got on top and put the Islanders under pressure. Fraser Logan had one shot saved and another cleared off the line and Danny Carroll had a header cleared away from under the bar from a corner. We also had a good shout for a handball in the box turned down after the ref had initially put the whistle to his mouth. Adolph Amoako saw also his lob over keeper Joe McCormack hooked off the line despite the best efforts of Glen Boosey to follow it in. As the half went on Bromley began to over play the ball at the back and almost got caught out when a stray ball was fired wide by a Newport striker. Three mins before half time with the Ravens pushing on for the lead they received a sucker punch, when a ball over the top caught Curnow out of position and Greening hit the ball on the half volley and it flew past Walker for 1-0. The away fans and players were visibly stunned, but almost got back level before the break when Logan ran through and McCormack made a great save low down to his right.

The second half started with Newport playing their best football and Bromley took a while to settle. The midfield looked confused and the Islanders had a good shout for a penalty turned down. George reacted by bringing on Mark Watson for Boosey and going with three up front. With Bromley exerting more pressure the ball came out to Henriques who hit a sweet low drive from 35 yards that left McCormack with no chance. 1-1 just after the hour and it was all to play for. Carroll, Watson, Amoako and Watson again were all denied by a combination of McCormack and last ditch defending and Amoako also saw a thumping header come off the bar from a corner. At the other end a fine saving tackle from Henriques stopped what looked a certain goal for the Islanders late on. In injury time Bromley were denied once more when Henriques knocked the ball down for Watson, but McCormack palmed his effort away. Newport’s defence was marshalled by the excellent Steve Leigh who looked a class above. His performance was matched by Danny Carroll for Bromley, with Amokao, Logan and Henriques also putting in great performances. No complaints about the display, just a shame about the result.
