Shotwell Coho / Discount Split 7" (What Else? Records)
Shotwell Coho from San Francisco open this up with a rocky number called Rats. Vocal style reminds me a little of American Steel. A little bit gruff but it’s a fun poppy tune which seems to be about hating your job and drinking. Lots of whooping going on in the background. It’d be good to hear more from this band but apparently they’ve split up now so it’s our loss.
Discount do “Bloody Mediocrity” which, from the first few lines, also appears to be something to do with drinking. “He drank seven bottles empty, until he was swimming seriously. The room couldn’t be in view.” This is a happy sounding tune and makes me want to dance… it’s too short and this band are gone too. Damn. It’s a simple song but Alison’s vocals shine and soar as usual.
