First linking slows down the server. You ask how? Example: In any given day my homepage may get hundreds of visitors. Then 1/10 of them decide to link to each individual graphic. They do not take them and upload them to their server or directory as requested. These 1/10 choose 10 graphics to link to. So what this means is each time the page is loaded where the graphics are linked from that server in turn contacts this server to get the graphic and display on the linked page. 10 different links means 10 different contacts. So if 100 people linked a day and linked to 10 graphics a piece that would mean 1000 linked graphics. Then this is multiplied by each time the 100 people's pages that are linked are loaded. So as you could see this could have a large effect on this server.

Then you must not forget that this goes on 365 days a year. This is a very bad practice and has been known to close down sites such as one's like this . If sites like mine and others on the internet closed down where would you find graphics? You would have to make them yourself. My guess most of you would not come here if you had the time and could make them. Hence, I advice u all out there -

Linking from the Geocities Server will cause you problems. Whenever I delete, move, rename, or replace a graphic you will no longer have the graphic on the page that you linked to. I DO upload graphics also that you would not like to appear on your homepage. I do this to discourage linking to the graphics.

Although I have asked people (nicely) to stop linking to the graphics they continue to do so. If I catch you linking to the graphics you will not like the consequences. You might not like it when i link those images to some unhealthy sites that includes pornography or similar!
