Green Day formed in 1987 when Billie Joe and Mike Dirnt started a band called "Sweet Children". In 1989 Billie and Mike changed the name of the band to "Green Day" and realeased their debut album 39/smooth with the help of John Kiftmeyer[drums]. On a local punk signing Lookout Records. The album is now called 1039/smoothed out slappy hours.

Soon Frank Edwin Wright III [Tre cool] joined the band and together in 1991 they released their second album "Kerplunk". But it was their first major label release in 1994 "Dookie" that really made them popular. But popular for punk was not good. Green Day were accused of selling out all that punk stood for. Still Dookie sold an inexes of 12 million copies and is triple platanem in Australia, spawning the singles Longview, Basket Case and When I Come Around.

That year (1994} was a big one for Green Day stealing the show at Lullapollusa and Woodstock 2. Woodstock @ the gig Billie Joe quotes as "fuc*ing physcio" as the crowd became uncontrollable when he caught a piece of mud someone threw on stage with his left hand, put in between his teeth, then throwing it back at the crowed he quoted "Thank you very much, ya know it just goes to show that if you eat shit you won't die". This started the biggest mudfight ever captured on camera, where the crowd I'd estimate to be about 350 000 were all throwing mud at each other.
Green Day's bizarre stage presance has sent them to a cult status. Mooning the crowds, spitting out there mouths {and in each others) and abusing starstruck onlookers. It's all a part of the punk culture and us fans love it. A free concert Green Day played in Boston turned into a free frall with 20 000 expected and 100 000 showing up. The fear of a riot prision inmates were released to do security work at the gig, then sticking around to get autographs after the show.

Green Day's dark 1995 release of Insomniac however was not nearly as succsessfull with critics calling it nothing more then dookie part 2 and the bands lack of creative progress. That is however a load of shit as Green Days 1996 Australian tour sold out in just minites.

None the less, in 1998 Green Day answered some of those critics with the release of their latest album Nimrod. With singles like Hitchin' a Ride this album has lead to sales of 3 million world-wide so far. "Nimrod's the kind of album we've been wanting to make for like 5 or 6 years as we wanted to get more into the creative process and sort of visualize the music instead of listening to it. And Nimrods fit purfect for what we wanted to do, so it's fit purfectly for what we wanted to do." Billie Joe quoted in an interview on The Drum. In fact one of the albums most succsessfull singles Good Riddance {TOUL) was allready written when Dookie came out and was a B-Side on the Brainstew/Jaded single. "We didn't know if it was gonna make the record at all so we just recorded it and afterwarde we were like, it sounds so good"- Mike Dirnt. Lifes full of surprises and thats what Green Day write about. So whats instore for Green Day- They'll be starring in a B grade horror film and their next album is likely to be the soundtrack.
