Happy Days With the BACKSTREET BOYS - BB Oct 00
What makes the Backstreet Boys perkier than a playful puppy? Read on and find out!
It isn't riding in fancy limousines or attending posh music parties that makes the Backstreet Boys' hearts race the fastest. It's something much more simple. On their ride to the top of the pop world, Nick, Kevin, A.J., Brian and Howie have learned that as awesome as it is to travel the globe with tunes like "The One" from their 1999 chart-topping CD Millennium, nothing compares to spending quality time with their families in order to recharge their heart and soul batteries.
After all, when these terrific tunesters - who've been busy recording their third album, which is scheduled to be released in November - head back to their hometowns, they get tons of TLC from their fam and friends - and who can't use some of that?
Wanna bring a whopping smile to Nick Carter's face? Tell him he gets to take a break from BSB's busy schedule to visit his parents, Robert and Jane. The 20-year-old cutie says he can't wait for those return trips to Tampa, Florida, where he crashes at his parents' - 'cause that's the place where he can just be Nick, the guy and not Nick, the pop star. "The minute I get back, I switch off," Nick dishes. "When I get home, I can just be me."

Of course, Nick can't be anyone until he plops onto his pillow! "I love to stay in bed late. It's one of the luxuries I allow myself when I don't have to catch planes everyday!" Kevin Richardson seconds that motion. Clocking some shut-eye tops his to-do-first list when he heads to his family's farm in Lexington, Kentucky to see his mom, Ann. "The other day I came home and laid down with the TV and all the lights on, and I woke up the next morning at 9 a.m.!" reveals the tunester, who turns 29 on October 3.
Heading home to snore sounds like a bore. But as Kev's Lexington, Kentucky-born cousin Brian Littrell, 25, dishes, as soon as he's caught a few z's, he's ready and raring to spend quality time with his 'rents, Jackie and Harold. Doing what, you wonder? "Oh, just the simple things in life, like taking a walk in the park or having a picnic or going for a drive," he says. Sounds sensational. Brian's discovered that returning to the place where he was raised reconnects him with the people who gave him guidance when he was just getting started. "It's exciting to be able to relate to your roots and really ground youself again," B-Rok reveals.
Howie Dorough has the same gratitude for his p's, Paula and Hoke. "My family always made sure I made the right decisions," he declares. That's why he heads to their home in Orlando, Florida, he dedicates, like, every single second to his family. "I normally spend all my time off with my family, because I'm hardly ever there," the 27-year-old talent says.
Twenty-two-old A.J. McLean also digs hanging with his mom, Denise. But when he goes to West Palm Beach, Florida, he still reserves plenty of playtime for his pals. "I play pool a lot," A.J. reveals. "It's the only sport I'm good at. I'm also out at the movies or shopping or clubbing." Sounds like a blast! Awesome A.J. grins, "It's like being a kid again."
