* Ian Lindsay (Astbury) left Southern Death Cult while Billy Duffy was kicked out of Theatre of Hate, both in 1982.

* Ian moved into Billy's place wanting to form a band.

* Result - Death Cult is born.(They chose the name Death Cult to capitalise on the profile of Ian's former group)

* Ian & Billy asked 'Ritual' drummer Ray Mondo (Ray Taylor-Smith) to join band (black guy with Burundi-inspireed drumming)

* Couple of weeks later, they asked 'Ritual' guitarist Jamie Stewart to audition for bass. He was hired on the spot.(Jamie was in awe with Billy because Theatre of Hate was his favourite band at the time).

* Recorded "Death Cult EP" at Focus Studios, London. Songs included - 'Brothers Grimm', 'Horse Nation', 'Ghost Dance' & 'Christians' (06/03/83 to 06/04/83).

* Death Cult makes their live debut in Oslo (07/25/83). They didn't start out in England, because there was too much pressure on them from the media (they were the first post-punk 'supergroup')

* Band was unhappy with Ray Mondo because he didn't want to change his style while the band wanted to change their style. So they exchanged Ray for Nigel Preston (ex-Sex Gang Children, Theatre of Hate)

* After exchange, they immediatly went into studio to record Gods Zoo (09/29/83 to 10/01/83)

* Recorded 'A Flower in the Desert', 'Too Young (Rider in the Snow)', 'Butterflies' & 'With Love (Sea & Sky)' for the David Jensen show on BBC Radio One at Maida Vale studio, London (10/19/83)

* Death Cult plays their last show in the Empire Rooms, London (11/29/83)

* In January 1984, they were asked to play on Channel 4's prime-time music program 'The Tube'.

* They didn't want a 'doom-and-gloom' image, because they wanted to be big in America, so they dropped 'Death' and became THE CULT

* That performance brought their swirling gothic rock to a nation-wide audience. Sensing a new era had begun, Ian reverted to his real surname: Astbury

* The Cult is Born

* In 1996, Beggars put out a Death Cult compilation called 'Ghost Dance'. GET IT NOW!!
