It is taken from the Horace's "CARMINA", and it is a latin sentence which means " like the moon among the smaller stars"...that's to say, the moon is a star bigger than the others, so shines more than them...velut=asinter=amongignis (ignes)=starsluna=moon minor (minores)=smaller

from:erin powell

velut: adverb meaning just as, like. even as
inter: among, about, approximately
ignis: fire
luna: moon
minor: smaller
i got these definitions from an online latin dictionary. since in the celebrity skin lyrics, they are seperated by bullets, they might not have an interconnecting meaning, like a phrase, proverb, or sentence. but since the song title is northern star, it probably has something to do with being among the stars, like a constellation or the angels themselves. i couldn't find a book giving phrases and when i searched the dictionary using two or more words, the results came back empty. you're best bet would be to go to a latin professor at you're local college or high school latin teacher.

well, I can tell you it's Latin, and although I do latin at school i'm not THAT good at it lol...however I have a dictionary.velut=as/even as/just as/as if/just as if inter=between/among ignus=fire (or firey, the exact word isn't in this dictionary, it has ignis and igneus) luna=moonminor=to hang over OR small I'd translate it as something like "just as the fire hangs over the moon" but that's only guessing, it's difficult to piece the words together into a sentence, but email me back if you have any other guesses on it!~eva

they mean:
velut: just as
inter: earth
ignis: fire
luna: moon
minor: smaller
So I guess it's: just as, earth, fire, moon but smaller?????

I always thought it had an astrolgical meaning. For example, lunar means the moon and that is an astroglogical body.

velut-- just as, even as, as for example as it were, just as if as though
inter---- between, among, amidst or--during,within, in the course of
ignus---native, natural, like a free man, noble,
luna mintor --- waning moon
this is what the words mean -- idrect translation would sound rediculous..... it`s latin.. i took a course in it for three years.... write back and tell me what you think it could saw cause i can`t really make sense of it sexcept....that it`s just like the person is free... but just as if they were here

I know what "luna" means "moon" so I will assume that when they say "minor" the mean little. I am almost 100% sure that it is LATIN. Since it is a dead language, I can't find a site to translate it. I went to altavista.com and then to translate and tried to translate it from italian to english. The only thing it could translate was "luna" to "moon", but I already knew that from Roman Mythology. If you could find someone who knows latin to translate it please tell me, I will also keep searching. It really has been bothering me! -Matt

from:unknown
Dear Whoever-You-Are
I found a LATIN translator site and I translated them...here you go...
velut- just as, like, even as
inter- 1. between, among; 2. approximately, about, around, roughly; 3. (could possible mean) at,
inignus- not found...similar words: 1. dignus- worthy, worthy of; 2. indingus- not worthy, not worthy of, lacking of merit, unfit; 3. perdignus- very worthy; 4. pignus- pawn, pledge, token
luna- moon
minor- smaller, lesser, slightler
Apparently "ignus" is not a word...I tried a few websites and there is no such word. Pretty much, the phrase "velut inter ignus luna minor" means "like around ----- smaller moon." The only thing is the way the place words, the sentence could be rearranged. Like all Romance Languages, the adjective goes AFTER the noun it is describing. That is why "minor" is after "luna". Ignus could be a name for a star...possibly the LATIN name for the Northern Star, Polaris. If this is so...the phrase still doesn't seem to make sense... CordiallyMatthew Eilers

You could translate it two ways: "like the waning moon among stars" or "like the moon among the small stars" It was the last sentence in "Carmina" by Horace. Read it and you will understand it.

By now someone has probely already told you exactly what this means, but just in case they havent, i'll try to help out. I know what a few of the words mean but not all. I'm pretty damn sure its Latin, so go find a Catholic priest, he should know. I would ask one, but that would mean going to church. Anyways look below for what im pretty sure is the right meanings for a few of the words.
velut: i have no clue
inter: to put dead body into a grave or tomb; bury
ignis: i think it means fire or to ignite
luna: is the moon
minor: smaller; lesser

Well, I'm italian, I lived in the States for 6 months, and I attend a school here in Italy where I study latin a little more than what I did in the States... I've been studying it for 7 years, and I consulted my teacher about this sentence; it cannot be translated litterally, because the verb (est) is omitted, but it should mean: "as if among the stars the moon shines less". velut=as if; inter ignis=among the fires, where fires means stars; luna=moon; minor=smaller, as weaker.
