Afghan Whigs SONGS
Afghan Whigs ALBUMS
'Sometimes I feel like I'm standing naked on the stage' tells Greg Dulli. This because of the lyrics of his songs are so very personal. And this is why we all like and understand The Afghan Whigs. The songs often deal about strong and strange relationships with women. Sometimes strange because in the song 'be sweet' he tell the ladies: 'Ladies let me tell you about myself, I got a dick for a brain and my brain is gonna sell my ass to you. Now I'm OK, but in time I'll find I'm stuck, cause she wants love, and I still want to fuck'. You see: not the regular balled-like romantic lyrics..
I started to listen to the Afghan Whigs in 1994 when I bought their 'Gentlemen'-album. It really was a new world for me. Suddenly I listened to real music. Striking is the beautiful song My Curse, sang by a female singer called Marcy Mays. The Afghan Whigs have a little underground hit with the song 'Gentlemen' and they play at a lot of festivals including Holland's 2 biggest festivals Pinkpop and Lowlands. And not just regular gigs, but the band really works very hard on the stage. Some people describe it as a wall of sound coming your way.
For a long time we don't hear a single thing of the Afghan Whigs. This is due to the personal problems of singer Greg Dulli, who was really sick. He told us that he was too scared to leave his own home. All the fans are happy when they release an album called Black love. An album with a mysterious sphere, also represented by the smoking incense on the front cover, with a black background. Drummer Steven Earle is replaced by Paul Buchiguani. The first single is Honkey's Ladder, with 2 interesting b-sides: TLC's Creep and the censored American version of Honkey's Ladder (got you where I want you mother******). The second and last single is 'Going to town'
Before these 2 albums there are some other Afghan Whigs albums called Halloween, Up in it and Congregation. These albums were not as successfull as Gentlemen and Black love. Gentleman was the big breakthrough for the band. But we can't ignore these albums. Especially the songs Miles is dead and Conjure me are really good. Especially when when Greg Dulli sings it live, really very emotional.
Right now all the fans are waiting for a new Afghan Whigs album. There are rumours about a project called 'Twilight singers' with Greg Dulli and some other strange people. There is another sideproject called Ass Poneys, by John Curly. I must admit their album 'Electric rock music' is very nice. But not as good as the Afghan Whigs albums. But wait……. and I wait
