And then there was this band called Johan. I'm sorry? Yes Johan is a band from Holland. They are at the same label as Daryll-Ann and Caesar, but they are the only band of this Excelsior label who had a hit in the charts with the beautiful song 'Everybody knows'. The video with this song was broadcast very often at the Dutch Music Channel TMF, and honestly: it was the only good song on this Music Channel, because they just play shit all the time.

Johan first started with the name 'Visions of Johanna. Their first release was a 7 inch single with the songs 'Swing' and 'Payment' on it. This was a limited edition with 400 copies. The band altered their name into Johan. And then there was the first Johan album called….. Johan! I bought this album the day of the release, because it is really great. The songs 'Swing' and 'Payment' are also on this album. 'Swing' is now released as a single. But the real succes starts with the single 'Everybody knows' with the striking b-side 'Everytime I think of you'. Suddenly everybody knows about this band. Johan plays at every festival in Holland, including the 2 most importent festivals: Pinkpop and Lowlands. And they really made a good impression.

The last single is called 'December'. And then: Johan goes America!! A short American tour. The people over there liked it, but there was not any success unfortunately. But I think it was really exciting for the band to go there! But what kind of music do they make.. Well that's very hard to describe, because the songs really vary a lot. In the song 'Payment' I hear a sample of Pavement's 'Silent Kid', 'Visions of Mars' sounds a bit like an improved David Bowie, but no we can not compare the music with other bands. It is just high quality guitarmusic.

Right now Johan is recording a new album which will be in the shops at the end of the year. All the fans are really curious what thy will make, but personally I think they will bring us some new beautiful music. And the last thing we've seen of Johan was their television gig with a complete orchestra. They performed there on 1 evening with some other bands together with the orchestra, and it was called "With a little help from my friends" They (well Jacco and Niels) performed 3 songs, and it sounded very good. The latest news is very sad... after Niels leaving Johan, also guitar player Remco Krull left the band. Johan at the moment is a 2 person band. The forthcoming concerts have been cancelled. We hope they can find some new musicians to complete the band again, because they've got a lot of new material ready to be recorded..
