I believe that this song is telling the story of man whose love has left him for someone else. He is about to leave them both, but before he goes, he must tell them how he feels. He mentions making lists of things to say, maybe in an attempt to win his love back, but ultimately decides that he will leave them alone. He still cares for his love, and harbors no animosity against the one that is with her now. He has conflicting feelings, but lets himself become an outside observer of their relationship.
