Former Beatle George Harrison spent millenium eve in hospital with his wife by his side as doctors tried to reinflate his lung after a kinfe attack.
A hospital spokesman said the next 24 hours were critical, although the rock legend was in "good spirits".
Harrison and wife Olivia were attacked by a man who broke into the couple's mansion as they slept in the early hours of Thursday.
The former Beatle was saved by his wife, who knocked the man unconscious by breaking a heavy bedside lamp over his head.
Olivia Harrison also suffered minor injuries.
The suspected attacker, Michael Abram, 33, has been charged with attempted murder. He was granted bail to be detained at a psychiatric unit.
