I AM THE WALRUS
(Lennon-McCartney)
1967

John Lennon's latest psychedelic epic seems to have come about by linking
together a number of independent song ideas. Some of the lyrics were
written while tripping. Lennon claims that he was influenced to write some
sections of the song when he heard a police siren in the distance at his
Weybridge home. Other influences on the lyrics are clearly Lewis Carroll
and the nonsense verse writer Edward Lear. Lennon was growing increasingly
amused by the degree of interpretation that others had been projecting onto
his lyrics. It is clear from later interviews that "I Am The Walrus" was an
attempt to give the Beatle analysts something to really tax their minds!

As usual, George Martin arranged the strings and brass. Eight violins, four
cellos and three horns. The "oompah oompah" backing vocals were performed
by members of the Mike Sammers Singers, stars in the firmament of 'easy'
listening.
