MICHELLE
(Lennon-McCartney)
1965
Following the most startling song on Rubber Soul, Paul's "Michelle" comes
across as a pretty, if rather trite, love song. For the French lyrics he
contacted Ivan Vaughn - the school friend responsible for introducing him to
John Lennon. Ivan was now married to a French language teacher. She
provided him with "sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble", a translation
of the previous line, "these are words that go together [very] well".
"Michelle" is probably the most famous song on the album - versions by the
Sandpipers and British duo David and Jonathan all had chart success. David
and Jonathan were really Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway, who would become
two of Britain's most prolific and successful songwriters of the early
seventies.
