OCTOPUS'S GARDEN
(Starkey)
1969
During a boating holiday in Sardinia, Ringo was told by the ship's captain
about the way octopuses lived. This apparently inspired Ringo to write his
second song for the Beatles. George felt that Ringo was composing "cosmic
songs without noticing it."
E C#m
I’d like to be under the sea
A B
In an octopus’s garden in the shade
E C#m
He’d let us in, knows where we’ve been
A B
In his octopus’s garden in the shade
C#m
I’d ask my friends to come and see
A B
An octopus’s garden with me
E C#m
I’d like to be under the sea
A F#m B7 E
In an octopus’s garden in the shade
C#m
We would be warm below the storm
(Ooh)
A B
In our little hieaway beneath the waves
(Ah)
E C#m
Resting our heads on the sea bed
(Ooh)
A B
In an octopus’s garden near a cave
(Ah)
C#m
We would sing and dance around
A B
Because we know we can’t be found
E C#m
I’d like to be under the sea
A F#m B7 E
In an octopus’s garden in the shade
A F#m A C#m
A F#m A
E C#m
We would shout and swim about
(Ah, ooh)
A B
The coral that lies beneath the waves
(Lies beneath the ocean waves)
E C#m
Oh what joy for every girl and boy
(Ah, ooh)
A B
Knowing they’re happy and their safe
(Happy and their safe)
C#m
We would be so happy you and me
A B
No one there to tell us what to do
E C#m
I’d like to be under the sea
(Ah)
A F#m B7 C#m
In an octopus’s garden with you
(Ah, ooh)
A F#m B7 C#m
In an octopus’s garden with you
(Ah, ooh)
A F#m B7 E
In an octopus’s garden with you
(Ah, ooh)
