THE FOOL ON THE HILL
(Lennon-McCartney)
1967
Written and sung by Paul, who also played piano, recorder and flute. John
and George are responsible for the brassy mouth organ sounds. The finished
track was edited by 90 seconds. It is the most covered song from Magical
Mystery Tour. Sergio Mendes enjoyed a US Top 10 hit with his version in
1968 and Shirley Bassey's cover touched the very lowest reaches of the
British charts in 1971.
D6 G6
Day after day alone on a hill
D6 G6
The man with a foolish grin is keeping perfectly still
Em A7
But nobody wants to know him
D Bm Em A
They can see that he’s just a fool and he never gives an answer
Dm Bb Dm Bb
But the fool on the hill sees the sun going down
C Dm Bb Dm D
And the eyes in his head see the world spinning round
G6
Well on the way head in a cloud
D6 G6
The man of a thousand voices talking perfectly loud
Em A7
But nobody ever hears him
D Bm Em A
Or the sound he appears to make and he never seems to notice
Dm Bb Dm Bb
But the fool on the hill sees the sun going down
C Dm Bb Dm D
And the eyes in his head see the world spining round
D6 G6 D6 G6 Em A7
And nobody seems to like him
D Bm Em A
They can tell what he wants to do and he never shows his feelings
Dm Bb Dm Bb
But the fool on the hill sees the sun going down
C Dm Bb Dm D
And the eyes in his head see the world spinning round
D6 G6 D6 G6
Oh round ‘n’ round ‘n’ round ‘n’ round ‘n’ round
Em A
He never listens to them
D Bm Em A
He knows that they’re the fools they don't like him
Dm Bb Dm Bb
The fool on the hill sees the sun going down
C Dm Bb Dm D
And the eyes in his head see the world spinning round
D6 G6 D6 G6
Oh round ‘n’ round ‘n’ round ‘n’ round oh
