Constituído principalmente de ex-punks, o scum ("escória") rock foi uma reação bem humorada às carrancudas virtuosas bandas de hardcore que dominavam a cena novaiorquina no final dos anos 80. Mais preocupados em "quebrar regras antigas do que inventar novas", os scum rockers continuam a apresentar-se em festas e casas noturnas como o CBGB. Existem bandas de scum de todos os estilos musicais, do punk rock quase country do The Waldos ao hardcore gritado das Lunachicks. Principally consisting of ex-punks, scum rock was a happy reaction to the angry-faced virtuoso bands of hardcore who dominated the New York scene in the ends of the '80's. More interested in "breaking the old rules than inventing new ones". Scum rockers continue until present day playing in parties and clubs like CBGB. There exist scum rock bands in all styles of music, from the punk rock of the Waldos to the hardcore screams of the Lunachicks. Like the columnist and cultural agitator, Michael Board, wrote "in scum rock the only thing that doesn't count is pretension and electronic music, the rest is rock'n'roll".
