Last night I saw Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at The Odeon in Cleveland, Ohio and needless to say, they were awesome as usual.
I'm sure you want to hear about the show, but I'll get to that in a minute. First, I want to tell you about my first cool experience of the night. I went to the show with a friend of mine and we got there about 40 minutes early. The guys were doing a show for a private party when we got there and the security guy at the door made us go back outside and stand in the cold until 7, which is when the doors were supposed to open. Well, the private party ended up going longer than expected, so we stood outside in the cold for about an hour, but it turns out that this was a good thing. As we were standing there, several of the guys came out the door to go to the bus. Since we were the very first people in line, they had to walk right past us to get to the bus. First Kurt came out, then a few minutes later Glen and either Mike or Ron (can't recall for sure, but I think it was Ron) came out, then Josh, and finally Andy. This was *SO* cool. We said hi to all of them as they walked past. It was funny when Josh went by. I think we kind of scared him. As we were waiting in line, we were talking to the lady who was in line behind us. When she saw Josh, though, she stopped talking and exclaimed rather loudly “Hey, it’s Josh!” while waving her arms around and pointing. Also, I was squealing and jumping up and down excitedly by that time. We said hello to him and he responded, but he had this look on his face that kind of said “Oh no, you aren’t a bunch of crazy fans, are you?” I seriously think we did scare him. When Andy came out, he stopped for a minute or two to talk, mainly about how cold it was. (I guess being California guys, they're just more wimpy about the cold than us hardy Ohio folks. ?) That was ok though, because Andy looked even cuter than usual all bundled up in his big, heavy winter coat. I don’t know why, but I think it made him look really cute.
Since we got there so early and were the first in line, we got right in front of the stage, dead center. It's only the second time I've been that close at a concert and it was so much fun to be that close to the bands.
Ok, so now for the show. I'm not sure what to say other than it was *AWESOME*. Actually, that's not true. I also could say that it was great, incredible, fantastic, marvelous and wonderful. (I could go on, but I don't want to spend all day thinking of adjectives that mean really good. ?) The opening act, The Blue Hawaiians, were really good. This was one of the few times I've been to a concert where I actually liked the openers. I had never heard of them, but they were really good, especially the bass player. I know this sounds really weird, but their music reminded me of a cross between country, rock, and surf music. It was different, which is why I liked it. Most of the music sounded like rock combined with surf music, but there were a few that sounded a bit country (at least to me. My friend thought I was crazy when I said that.) I was going to buy their CD. Unfortunately, I had no money. (I don't know how hard their CDs are to find, but if anyone knows where to get them, please let me know.) [Note: For more info on The Blue Hawaiians, check out their website - Lesley]
Now to get to BBVD. The guys sounded amazing as usual and Ron and Mike more than held their own. Mike was just hot and his solos sounded great. I still wish Jeff hadn't left, but since he did, I don't think they could have found a better replacement for him, no matter how hard they tried. Ron was also really good. I don't remember which one it was, but during one song Ron and Glen came to the front of the stage (right in front of me!!!) and were taking turns at solos. That was really great.
I wrote down the songs in the order they played them, so here they are, along with anything I could remember. I tried to recall things that happened, so that I could include them here, but unfortunately, there are things that I know I forgot. Anyway, this is what I remembered:
Big and Bad -
Great
opening number. It got everyone going even more than they already were.
Mr. Pinstripe Suit
Big Time Operator
Who's That Creepin'
-This
was hilarious because Scotty made a joke about
the Backstreet Boys. He was talking about the song and said that it's about
things that are scary, like the Backstreet Boys. He then went on to explain
that he has nothing against the Backstreet Boys, it's just that he likes
98
Degrees better, especially the guy with
the
goatee.
King Of Swing
-
This was when the band played Follow the Leader,
with Scotty being the leader. They went every
where around the stage. It was great when they did this because at one
point they were up at the very front of the stage and all went right past
where I was standing.
You & Me &
The Bottle Makes 3 Tonight - At one point in this song, Glen
was
standing over by Josh, acting like he was
going to push the keys on Josh's piano. This
was funny because as he was doing this, Josh
kept
shaking his head and giving him dirty looks that said "Don't you dare."
You know the expression "If looks could kill"? Well, I'm glad they can't
because if they could, Glen would have been
dead.
Mambo Swing
Some Things
-
I really liked this song before, but now that I've heard it live, I like
it even better. It's now my *absolute* favorite
song from the new album. Before they started playing it, Scotty
said
that this was their sexy song. After
seeing the moves he was doing as he was singing, I'd have to agree. I almost
passed out right then and there.
Jumpin' Jack
I Wanna Be Like
You
Jump With My Baby
I'm Not Sleepin'
Go Daddy-O
And for the encore:
Minnie The Moocher
What's Next
So Long, Farewell,
Goodbye - I'm so glad they did this song. I love Scotty's
voice,
but I'm glad to get to hear the some of the other guys as well. I think
they all have good voices, especially Andy.
After the show they did the usual meet and greet with fans. I had already met them before, but I was still excited. I got autographs and had my picture taken with each one of them. A few months ago, BBVD played at a Louis Jordan tribute concert here in Cleveland and I had them all sign my program from that. It was cool because all of them asked me if I went to that. I did, so it was a good conversation starter which was good because as starstruck as I was, I had a hard time saying much of anything to them, even though they were all so nice, except Andy. I actually managed to say more than just dozen or so words to him. When he saw that I had the program from the Louis Jordan concert he asked if I’d gone to that show and, after I told him I had, he asked me if I heard it when he messed up on one of the songs. Apparently, when he sang “Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby” he sang some of the words wrong, but I didn’t notice. I told him this and said that he shouldn’t have told me about it because I never would have known. He laughed and said that he’d remember that for next time.
The last person I talked to was Scotty, which was so cool. After I got my picture taken with him and got his autograph, I asked for a hug, to which he responded with a little chuckle and big smile and then said, "Yeah, come here.” and then gave me a great big hug. The way he said that was so cool. I'm just glad I didn't pass out or have a heart attack right then and there. The way my heart was pounding, I thought I'd do one or the other. If any of you other ladies out there ever see BBVD and want a hug from Scotty, don't be shy to ask. He gives great hugs.
Well, I think that's about it already.
I guess I had a lot to say. Thanks for reading this. I had so much fun
at that concert that it’s great to get to share it with other people who
are fans too.
