» CHAPTER THREE: THE LETTERS «

This journey to the secretive side of the Halliwell Manor was ever more spooky and bone-chilling to Kevin. Knowing that it was the middle of the night and knowing that Brian could still be lurking around, waiting to find Kevin again. But curiousity had twisted Kevin’s mind and he couldn’t stand not to go investigate. Something blew against his back, he shivered with fear and looked for a door to peek into.

There was one at the end of one of the never-ending halls, he grasped the door knob, it was rusty and covered with a thin layer of dust. He turned it slowly and opened the door a crack, just peeping his head in. The few bits of furniture were covered with ghostly white sheets, frightening Kevin a bit. There was a large bed against the wall with a painting above it. A gold frame surrounded the painting, a portrait of a beautiful woman. She had long, flowing, curly dark brown hair. She had on a white dress and a floppy hat in her hand, she looked so elegant and important. The fireplace was massive, but probably hadn’t been used for quite a while since that room was very chilly too.

Kevin finally went inside, looking and touching everything in the room. There was another picture he had not noticed before, a portrait of two very young girls, he knew immediately who they were. Both wearing matching blue dresses, but one with blazing red hair and the other with flowing chesnut hair. The girls were only children in the picture and Kevin smiled to himself.

Then he went over to a desk in the corner, he was tempted to open one of drawers, wishing they would hold a secret. The wonders of this unfamiliar side of the house disturbed him greatly, but something inside him aroused his curiousity. Sliding open one of the doors he found bottles and bottles of whiskey. 'He did have a problem with drinking' Melanie’s words that day in the library haunted him. He put the bottles he clutched in his hands back down, then something else caught his attention. There was a letter, open inside the drawer. The writing was terribly crooked and slanted, almost illegible. He picked it up and studied it further.

Dearest Martha,
I’ll be taking you to the cottage tomorrow... just like I promised. You will not have to worry about my wife or children finding out, I know it disturbs you. I will pick you up and we will head straight to the cottage. I love you darling.

Love,
Frank

Kevin put down the letter and soon found many others. He read them and all were very similar. Talking about this cottage, that Kevin knew absolutely nothing about. The only thing that changed was the name... it went from Martha, to Caroline, Rebecca, Katherine... and many others. He became even more meddlesome and he picked up another, but this one really sent shivers up his back.

Sarah,
No, luckily no one has found out, yet. I love you so very much and I don’t want to loose you just because I am supposed to be committed to someone else. No one will ever stop us now, not even your damn son.  I shall see you at the cottage again, I miss you so very much. Do not fret, if I have it my way... Brian will never be able to tell another soul about us.

All my love,
Frank

Kevin tried to understand as best as he could, there were so many things that he felt he must know. He folded the last letter he read and stuck it in his night clothes’ pocket. He decided it would be better if he headed back to his room then, the image of Brian’s astonished face came back into his mind, and he did not want to see him then. He left the room and sauntered through the nipping halls back to his bedroom.
