» CHAPTER EIGHT: ANGER AND CONFESSION «

Melanie slowly approached Kevin, who was sitting in his room, gazing out the window. Outside, he could hardly see the beach, but only the pretty garden, where he had first had tea when he arrived at the manor. That was before he knew anything of the house’s and family’s past.

“I told Geri,” Melanie stated, tapping Kevin on the shoulder, he jumped and turned around.

“You frightened me... you-you told her?” Kevin bit his lip.

“Yes, she’s not too happy. In fact I don’t really know how she’s doing now, she just stormed into her room... I haven’t seen her all day.”

“Oh, oh, dear...”

“I’m dreadfully sorry, I now realize how much you loved each other...”

“Well, it’s all over now, isn’t it?”

“I wouldn’t know, I’m sure Geri would forgive you... it was just one kiss,”

“Yes, but...”

“I know, I know... I hope you can patch things up,” Melanie smiled, then left the room.

Brian felt himself heat up with anger. He decided that Kevin was his enemy, and he had to go. From Brian’s point of view, he had just waltzed in here, taking Geri. Then he goes and hurts her like he did and expects everything to be alright again. His ears grew hot and there was rage in his eyes as he hustled down the halls. He found Kevin, sitting in his room, still. The door was slightly opened, so he just welcomed himself in.

“Kevin...” he said boldly.

“Oh, Brian, hello...”

“Can I see you outside, please?”

“Outside... where?”

“The beach, please come with me...”

“What’d you bring me down here for, Brian?” Kevin asked when they had reached the rocky beach.

“How could you?”

“You know?”

“I saw you do it... now I’m going to tell you... you’re a damn fool, a damn fool!” Brian exploded.

Kevin was shocked and stuttered, “I, I... I know I am...”

“Tell me Mr. Richardson... had no one had found out, would you have still pretend to love Geri, with a guilty conscience?”

“I don’t know Brian, I’ve been so troubled since I’ve arrived here,”

“Oh, well maybe you shouldn’t have come at all, we’d all be so much happier. I cannot believe you betrayed Geri like that! You wretched fool!”

“I know... I’m sorry...”

“I want you just to go, so that we can go back to the way we were, leave... just like Geri...”

“What?”

“Geri’s leaving, because of all this, she’s leaving, going away, and now none of us will ever see her again!”

“Brian, I do love her, as much as you might think that I’m a fake at that... I do still love her, with all my heart!”

Kevin saw a tear trickle down Brian’s cheek and then fall to the ground. Never had Kevin expected Brian to ever act like this. He had such authority and rage in his tone, he knew he was maddened and once again, Kevin was terrified.

“I think there’s something you should know...” Brian said through more tears, “Something that no one, not a soul besides me knows... Mr. Halliwell did not drown,” Brian paused for a long time, studying Kevin. “It wasn’t any accident... Mr. Halliwell was murdered... murdered by me...”
