» CHAPTER EIGHTEEN «

~ The Next Morning ~

 A.J. and Kevin walked up to the front desk. "You know, the blue one would look fabulous on you," A.J. said to the woman behind the desk as she was looking at a catalogue.

"You really think so?"

"Oh yeah, it’ll bring out the color of your eyes," A.J. said.

"Well what length should I get?" the woman asked.

"Come here and let me look at you," A.J. said. As the woman got up, Kevin made his move. "You should get a medium one."

"Thanks for all your help," she said.

"No problem," A.J. said. Just then Kevin walked over. "Did you get it Kev?"

"Yeah, and it was all thanks to you," Kevin said.

"Let’s just call it even."

"Agreed." It was a fair exchange. A.J.’s life for Kevin’s sex life.

"Mary, remember how I thought I was sick?" Rebecca asked her best friend as they sat and talked in their Manhattan apartment.

"Yeah. What did the doctor say?"

"He said that I’m pregnant and that whoever said that I couldn’t didn’t know what they were talking about," Rebecca said.

"That’s perfect. It’s what you always wanted," Mary said.

"It’s almost perfect," Rebecca answered softly, looking at the picture of Kevin she kept in her wallet.

"Hey Kevin, can I talk to you?" Nick asked.

"Sure, what’s up?"

"When you go to New York I’m coming with you. I have to see Mary," Nick said.

"That’s fine, but I don’t know where Mary lives," Kevin said.

"Yeah, but Rebecca will."

~ Three Months Later ~

 "Well, this is it," Nick said, ringing the bell.

"Hello," Rebecca said, opening the door. Mary was right behind her. To their surprise, they found Kevin and Nick in the doorway.

"We have to talk," the guys said to the two girls in unison.

"We’ll go out on the terrace," Mary said, pushing Nick out of the door so Rebecca and Kevin could be alone.

"Rebecca, there’s something I was to say. I would have said it sooner, but your plane took off before I had the chance. What I’m trying to say is I love you. I’m sorry I took you for granted. I want you in my life, even if you can’t have kids. I still love you, I need you. You can think whatever you want of me, but I just had to tell you that."

"Kevin, the first thing I have to say is that the doctor was wrong. I’m three months pregnant and it’s yours. The second thing is that I love you too," Rebecca said. "Now give me a kiss."

Kevin kissed her and held her. It was at that very moment that he promised himself that he would never let her get away again.

"You’re the last person I ever expected to see Nick," Mary said softly, finally breaking the ten-minute silence between them.

"Mary, I know you must hate me but for the past three months my life has been hell without you. I know I said some hurtful things and it was stupid of me to get you on the rebound, but that was then and this is now. Now I’m asking you to take me back," Nick pleaded. "I love you."

"Nick, I have been waiting for you to say those words for a long time. I love you too," Mary said, leaning in to kiss him.
