» CHAPTER THREE: THE WAITRESS «

The next morning the guys had breakfast in the hotel. Kayla was their waitress. She was a pretty girl, with a hard-rock edge to her looks. Her hair was long, straight and black, the front pieces were dyed a bright blue. She had nice purple eyes, that seemed to mock the people around her. Her fair skin was accented by the deep red lipstick she wore. AJ was attracted to her right away.

"Hi, I'm Kayla. I'll be your waitress, what can I get for you?" she asked in a disinterested tone.

"What do you have?" AJ asked.

"A buffet, and... ok, nothing else, just a buffet" Kayla said, then added. "I'm just here to hand over the check and take your money. So, five buffets."

"Sure," AJ answered.

"Why can't guys like you just go to McDonalds or something," she mumbled, walking away.

"What was that all about?" Nick asked.

"Maybe she's a fan," Brian answered.

"Look at her Bri, she's no fan" AJ said.

"Yeah, but you never know," Brian added.

"Alright, how about I give her a little test when she comes back with our check?"

"Go ahead," Kevin replied.

When Kayla returned, AJ asked the first question he could think of.

"So, Kayla, would you happen to know my birthday?"

"Why? Did you forget?" she answered. The guys burst out laughing, and Kayla dropped the check on the table and walked off.

"What's the matter Howie? Why didn't you laugh?" Brian asked.

"No reason, just thinking."

"About Gwen," Nick teased.

"So what if I am?" Howie shot back.

"Calm down man. You know you have to be careful with this girl" Kevin said.

"Why does everyone keep telling me that!"

Before Kevin could answer, Kayla came back for their money.

"Here," AJ said. "Keep the change."

"Oh, how generous," Kayla mumbled.

"I know," AJ answered.

"You know what? You've won my prize for the World's Worst Pickup Lines!" Kayla snapped.

"Can I have your number anyways?" AJ asked.

"Sure honey, take this down. 1-800-..." she said pausing, then finishing, "...you wish."

This sent the guys into fits of laughter again. Except for AJ. He sat thinking 'OK, play hard to get, I like that. But I will find you some how, just wait.'

AJ did track Kayla down, you see a man like AJ can be very charming. He charmed some info out of Kayla's boss. He found out she lived in the hotel. No one knew about before she came. She was quiet and stayed to herself, remaining a mystery. AJ found her room the afternoon, he took a deep breath and knocked on the door.

"Just a minute," he heard a voice call, then a minute later, "Whose there?"

"AJ," he answered. "Who?" Kayla said, opening the door. She had just gotten out of the shower and was wrapped in a towel. Her hair hung wet to her back.

"Hi," AJ said brightly.

"My, aren't we persistent" Kayla answered.

"Sorry to bother you, but I was just wondering if you would like to go out sometime?"

"Persistent and bold! I like it!"

"C'mon, just give me one chance," AJ begged.

"Kayla looked into his eyes for a second then said, "Fine. Tomorrow's my night off, meet me here at 7, not earlier, not later, at 7."

"Great," AJ said. "I'll be here."

"You'd better be," Kayla said. "Now leave so I can get dressed." With that Kayla closed the door, and put on some clothes. She hadn't had a date in a long time, too long. Not since Tom, her ex-boyfriend. Not since she ran away. She sure hoped AJ left her past alone, if he didn't ask, she wouldn't have to tell him.
