» CHAPTER FIVE «
~ Three Days Later ~
Lacey woke from her two-hour sleep. She was angry. How could anyone do that to her? For the second time! She hated it. Why had she agreed to go?
There was a knock at the door. "Lace, can I come in?"
"Yeah," she said, tired wary, angry, and still a little scared.
Krissy walked in, carrying a tray of food. "You’re not hungry, I know, but at least you’re talking."
"Will you ever let me tell you how I feel?" Krissy always made Lacey feel better, and she was surprised that she joked back.
"No. But seriously, you are feeling better?" Krissy put the tray on the table beside the bed.
"Yeah, thanks Kris."
Krissy lent over to hug her, but Lacey drew back. "Okay, I'll let you eat." She smiled as she got up from the bed, and walked out, closing the door.
She was worried. Lacey had only just started to get her life back together, and that creep had to go and ruin it. She picked up a magazine but couldn't concentrate on it. About half an hour later, she heard the water running up stairs in the bathroom, and an hour later, Lacey came down the stairs, wearing sweat pants, and a jersey.
"Yes I'm out of bed, and feeling better, no I don’t want to go to go to work tomorrow," Lacey said before Krissy even opening her mouth.
The phone rang, and Krissy answered it. Lacey sat down on a stool in the kitchen, and watched Krissy. She was everything a best friend could be, talented, caring, always there for her. And they shared an extra bond as well. There was a psychic connection between them, which sometimes they could tune in to each other’s thoughts. It had come especially handy when it was happening.
"Hello…oh, Hi Howie… yeah, she's out of bed… I'll ask. Lace, do you want to talk to Howie?"
Lacey hesitated, then took the portable. "Hi" she into the phone.
"Hey, how are you?"
"Better, I'm out of bed."
"That's great."
"Um… I wanna thank you for getting that jerk off me."
"That's okay."
"And I'm sorry that I didn't say goodbye or anything…"
"Hey that's okay. Have you talked to your work yet?"
"No, but Krissy has, they said they put the interview back."
"Yeah, they rang me and said that you couldn't get to the meeting, and you designed it. You didn't tell me that!"
"Yeah, I said I helped with it."
"They said it was your idea in the first place. Very modest aren't you."
"Yeah, hey, listen I gotta go, maybe I'll talk to you another time."
"Sure. Bye."
"Goodbye." Lacey hung up the phone.
"He's been ringing up everyday. He's really concerned about you," Krissy said.
"Yeah I know… but he shouldn't be. I don’t want him caught up in this."
"I’m sure that he’ll understand."
"You haven’t told him have you?"
"No, you know I wouldn’t do that. That’s your decision, not mine."

Lacey looked down at the three crosses side by side. ‘September 12th 1988’ read on all of them. A tear fell from her cheek, to the dirt below. She had only been 11 when it started, and she was scared, lonely. Those feelings had never gone away.
A part of her was missing, and she didn’t know how to get it back again.
