» CHAPTER THREE «

Howie sang his part on the chorus, but his mind was somewhere else. He was thinking out how he could discover the identity of the girl.

"Howie!" Nick's yell ripped Howie from his thoughts.

"Wha?" Howie asked as he snapped his head up.

"That's your lead, man," Nick explained. "You alright?"

"Fine," Howie assured him with a wave of his hand. He nodded to Kevin who was in the control booth, ready to start the music again. He took a deep breath, glanced down at the lyrics and began to sing.

"Howie?" Nick asked as they listened to the playback. "What's up?"

"Nothin'," Howie answered.

"You've been staring at that spot on the wall for ten minutes now," Kevin pointed out.

Howie sighed. "I've just been wonderin' how that girl got on our tape. Like you said, no one's been down here…it's just botherin' me."

Kevin snorted. "Bothering you? It's my studio and my equipment…if someone's been messin’ around down here, there will be death and dismemberment!"

"Kev…chill," AJ ordered, putting a hand on his back. "No one's been screwin' with your stuff."

"Back to the business at hand," Brian broke in. "Everyone okay with this?" He pointed to the tape he held in his hand.

"It's kickin'!" AJ exclaimed. "Let's show this baby to Dave, and see what he thinks."

Brian fidgeted with the tape at the mention of the record executive. "What if he won't let us put it on the album?" he asked.

Nick laughed. "Frick, name one song you've brought to him that he hated, and wouldn't let you put it on an album." He paused a moment. "None."

Brian smiled. "Alright. Let's go!"

Everyone ran up the stairs and headed toward the front door, the mysterious girl forgotten for now. Howie paused long enough to take one last glance at the studio door, before running out the car.
