Each day my daughter Karen and I care for eight little boys and girls at
MY SUNSHINE KIDS
THOMAS' GLASSES
Thomas is one of my Sunshine Kids
He's loved very much by his family,
He has no iris at all
He has to wear dark glasses
For a while he had to wear prisim glasses
One day I found him sitting
When I asked him what was wrong
So I turned on the HBO concert
Then when he saw Maurice
And when Barry appeared on the screen
It was then that I knew the problem
Thomas has had his surgery
You are all so dear to Thomas
Meet Thomas at Thomas' Play Area
SUPERHEROES
my Sunshine Kids Home Pre-school and Day Care. We do all of the
usual pre-school activities like sing kiddie songs, have circle time, read
story books, and create with our minds and our hands. But since this is a
home setting, we also get to do many of the fun things with the kids that
they would do if they were at home with their moms and dads. Together
we cook, have picnics, wash the car, watch Barney, Sesame Street, and
yes, even the Bee Gees. The next two poems were inspired by the kids
reaction to being "exposed" to the Bee Gees and their music.
From left to right-back row:
Adam, Aaron, Thomas, Corissa, Tyler, Kyle
Kneeling in the front row:
Jessica and Justin
And one of my favorite little boys.
He loves very much "his Bee Gees",
A Lego microphone is one of his favorite toys.
There is no problem there.
But he has a problem with his eyes,
A condition that is quite rare.
In either one of his eyes,
And without this iris muscle to contract,
His pupils can reach quite a large size.
When we go out in the sun to play,
So he relates very much to Robin
And sings his songs every day.
When we were indoors too,
To help prepare him for surgery
To correct his crossed eyes, this is true.
All alone in the hall,
Holding his glasses and sobbing
For no apparent reason at all.
He said he didn't know.
Then I asked him what he wanted to do
He said, "Watch the Bee Gees show".
And when Robin did appear
He said, "Robin wears dark glasses"
And then shed another tear.
I began to suddenly realize,
"Maurice wears clear glasses," he said
"And you can see his eyes."
Thomas said with a smile and a whim,
"Barry doesn't wear glasses.
I want to be like him."
That Thomas had that day.
So we folded up his glasses
And put them safely away.
And his prisim glasses are gone.
But I wanted to let you know
What you mean to this special little one.
And what I've said here is all true.
You helped him through his sadness that day,
And he really does love you.
Like Batman, Robin, and Superman
You all became Superheroes one day.
Read on and you will understand
How this role you got to play.
After many days of being stuck inside
At my home day care,
The rain just kept on falling down
And my nerves were beginning to wear.
We'd played with puzzles and playdough,
Sang songs and fingerplays and such.
Played hide and seek and hopscotch.
Was there anything left to do? Not much!
So I had a bright idea!
"Let's watch a movie," I said.
And did I put on Winnie the Pooh?
Oh no not me! I chose Sergeant Pepper instead.
Now the kids already know
Who the Bee Gees are,
Because to me you've always been
Great big super stars.
When I told them a Bee Gees movie
We were going to see,
They jumped up and down with excitement
And shouted and squealed with glee.
They learned quite quickly that Maurice
Didn't always wear a hat,
That Robin once had hair long and flowing,
And that Barry never changes, that's a fact.
Their favorite part is when Barry
Saved Robin from being choked.
And when Maurice tried to hug Barry,
They knew it was just a joke.
They liked it when Sergeant Pepper
Sang Strawberry back to life.
And the music and the dancing(?)
Helped to ease this one days strife.
So now whenever the kids play,
When they fight fires or dragons or bad guys,
They always call on the Bee Gees
Because you are Superheroes in their eyes.
