Chapter One: the First Attack/Encounter
"Isn't it odd that there are no stars out tonight?" Sillabub asked. She and her friends Bombalurina, Demeter and Exotica were lounging on the old Ford. The sun was setting quickly, and surprisingly, no stars had appeared.
"Yeah. Maybe it's cloudy up in the Heaviside Layer," Dem suggested. Bomba rolled her green eyes at her sister.
"Every Jellicle knows that it's never cloudy in the Heaviside Layer," she scoffed. Dem glared at her.
"It was just a suggestion," she muttered.
"Oh, shut up," Exotica hissed. Dem and Bomba both glared at her. Suddenly, something large and shadowy swooped low over head.
"What was that?!" Silla asked no one in particular. Exi shrugged. Dem and Bomba didn't know either. They'd only seen it out of the corner of their eyes.
"It was probably only a shadow," Bomba declared.
"Right," Silla agreed, somewhat shakily. Some one screamed suddenly from across the junkyard, proving to them that it wasn't just a shadow.
"Let's go!" Exi yelled, running in the direction of the scream. Etcetera came running toward them screaming about something.
"There's a giant bat!" she screamed between pants.
"Calm down," Dem said. "That's what every one says about Batman on the TV show, and he's not a giant bat."
"Well, that sure wasn't a man, or a Jellicle, or even a Pollicle!" Cettie continued. Bomba rolled her eyes again. The shadow swooped over head again. It wasn't a shadow.
It had wings, and a body. It was covered in coarse, brown fur. It also had huge fangs. It was a bat. A giant bat, just as Cettie had said.
"What is that thing?!" Dem asked.
"It's a bat, you moron!" Bomba yelled. It was then that they noticed that Cettie lay bleeding on the ground.
"It attacked her!" Silla screamed.
"Obviously," Bomba hissed.
"Shut up," Exi insisted.
"Fine," Silla agreed. "I don't like to argue anyway."
"Does anyone besides me think we should investigate this 'Bat'?" Dem asked.
"It might be wise," said Jellylorum, stepping out of the shadows.
"What's she doing spying on us?" Bomba whispered.
"I don't know," Exi replied, "But I don't think we should necessarily trust her."
