Sunny's Review of the 5th (?) National Tour of Cats

Overture Very excited, on my part. The Cats only came down the side aisle, which was kind of disappointing, because I was in a center aisle seat. Lighting was great. Music was mostly by synthesizers, throughout the play, which was also a bit disappointing.
Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats Good, but way too much like the video.
The Naming of Cats Alright. Didn't particularly stand out in my mind.
The Invitation to the Jellicle Ball Victoria was an excellent dancer-- I think she was the best Victoria I've seen. Mistoffelees danced but Munkustrap sang.
Jennyanydots: The Old Gumbie Cat Jennyanydots came out of the oven instead of the car. The dance was different than I've usually seen it, but it was still good. Although I may be biased, I think this number was much better on Broadway.
The Rum Tum Tugger My parents thought he was much better than the B'way Tugger, but I thought the exact opposite was true. He would pretend to be checking out members of the audience, which was pretty funny, and he and Bombalurina were also funny together. The end was good, but they did one thing that I didn't like as well as the usual ending. Instead of the all the kittens screaming each time, until only Etcetera/Rumpelteazer screams at the end, all the kittens screamed each time.
Grizabella the Glamour Cat Again, imitating the video more than I would like. Good, though.
Bustopher Jones: The Cat About Town Pouncival and Tumblebrutus were adorable! They were playing around the whole time, sometimes getting into play-scuffles, and Skimbleshanks kept scolding them. I loved that part.
Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer Rumpelteazer was an understudy, and she left me tres impressed. She was absolutely adorable and they were really perfect in their parts. I really liked it, except they cut out an entire verse.
Old Deuteronomy In my opinion, Tugger and Munkustrap's voices didn't blend as well as they do on the video. But still, pretty good.
Pekes and the Pollicles I think I would have enjoyed this if hadn't been CUT OUT OF THE PLAY!!!! It was completely non-existant! The weird thing was that there was a cat in the program named Rumpus, but the song wasn't there! Grr.
Jellicle Ball The catnap was more disturbing than I remember it being other times I've seen it-- should kids really be allowed to watch this scene? The dancing was great, though.
Memory I thought the Grizabella-tries-to-dance part was a bit too long. But Grizabella had a wonderful voice. As I wrote in my notes on this number, "it was really excellent."
Intermission!
(If that isn't funny to you, may I recommend the Producers soundtrack?)
This girl behind me who looked like she might be in college or something asked me if there was a plot. Of course, I explained it to her and had a nice conversation. At this point, I'd like to mention how horrible the ettiquite of most of the audience members was. They'd just walk around during the entire performance, and walk over and look in the orchestra pit, and walk out to get a drink, and talk-- it made me pretty mad because (despite how critical my review sounds) I was really enjoying the show and they were distracting! Okay... just had to get that out.
Moments of Happiness I never have thought this to be a particularly interesting song. I think Sillabub had a cold, because she sounded kind of like she did and she kept hitting bad notes. I don't think it was her fault, though, and she probably usually does a great job.
Gus: The Theatre Cat It was nice to actually hear the whole song again.
Growltiger's Last Stand I love this song! It wasn't as funny as it was on B'way, but still really great. I love how Ghengis lingers around during Gus's reprise and bows to him before leaving.
Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat Very good. I'm afraid I can't give a really detailed review because all I have in the notes was that vest bugged me because it was too short. What can I say, sometimes I'm distracted by trivial things.
Macavity: The Mystery Cat I think this number was actually better than it was on Broadway! Maybe. Demeter and Bombalurina were really good, and the fight was excellent-- possibly the best I've seen. Incredibly wonderful.
Magical Mister Mistoffelees I really enjoyed this. Mistoffelees (or should I say Quaxo?) was an excellent dancer, and he and Tugger were great together in this song. Another one to rival Broadway. The only thing about it I didn't like was that I felt there were a few parts where they imitated the video too much. If I'd wanted to watch the video, I'd have stayed home.
Memory Again, there was something wrong with that Sillabub, but you could still tell that she had a sweet voice. Grizabella was wonderful (I must have really liked Act 2-- that's when I started underlining all the compliments in my notes.), one of the best I've seen.
Journey to the Heaviside Layer Not as powerful as usual, to me, but I don't think I was paying much attention by then.
The Addressing of Cats Okay. No better or worse than usual. I always kind of lose interest during this song, so I can't tell you much.
Overall Review I know I sounded critical, but I honestly loved it. I really think that was the best production of "Macavity" I've ever seen. My only complaint was that they imitated the video way too much, which left it kind of flat. But still, it was great, and I'd highly reccomend it to anyone. It especially meant a lot to me because we were able to get tickets for the same day that I first saw Cats (also a national tour).

Baaaaack!
