Solo Violin selections shall be chosen from the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts Official Selection List, except where indicated. The list can be viewed at http://www.oocities.org/sunshinecoastfestival, or your local library.  You can also contact your discipline chair, the president or the vice president.  Participants wishing to substitute pieces not found on the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Performing Arts Official Selection List must obtain documented approval from either The Royal Conservatory of Music, Conservatory Canada, The Associated Board or The Victoria Conservatory of Music.  Attach this documentation to your entry form.

Folk and sacred classes are own choice.  Selections must meet the accepted standard for suitability of style and level of difficulty.

All other strings instruments must choose their selections from the following syllabi: (Where there is a conflict of grade level, the current RCM Syllabus prevails).
  (RCM) The Royal Conservatory of Music
 (CC) Conservatory Canada
 (AB) Associated Board
 The Victoria Conservatory of Music
Material from method books may be used in Pre Grade One classes only. 

Repeat signs should not be observed with the exception of D.C.. Remember that teachers are responsible for entering selections in the correct class.  If you have any questions please contact your discipline chair.

MEMORIZATION is desirable but not mandatory.  Sonatas need not be memorized.  Competitors should be aware that an adjudicator's decision may be influenced by memorization.



String Classes


Baroque - includes J.S.Bach, Purcell, Teleman, Handel, etc.

Classical - includes Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn,

Romantic - includes Brahms, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schubert

Canadian Composers - includes W. Lea, T. Kenins, G. Coutts,
J. Coulthard, V. Archer, J. Ethridge

20th and 21st Century -  Not Canadian

Composition - Any string instrument and accompanying instrument or instruments.  Works may be performed by the composer or a performer or performers of his/her choice. 

Chamber Music–  two contrasting selections - any combination of string instruments - when piano is included, the piano part must be original and not an orchestral reduction.  State ages, grade levels and instruments of performers.

Ensembles I – Folk/Popular/Modern: two contrasting selections - any combination of string instruments - piano may be included.
State ages, grade levels and instruments of performers.

Ensembles II – Baroque, Classical, Romantic, etc..: two contrasting selections - any combination of string instruments - piano may be included.  State ages, grade levels and instruments of performers.

Performers Choice - Folk/Popular/Modern

Own Choice - Classical
