Buckner Leavell, steward of the Western Kentucky Asylum for Insane,Hopkinsville, Kentucky, is a native of this place and was born June 24,1852. The Leavells are of French origin. Their emigration to and settlement in this country was previous to the Revolutionary war, and thegreat-great-grandfather of our subject was a general in that war. In Virginia the Leavell feamily settled and there several generations of them lived and died. Lewis Livingston Leavell, the father of Buckner Leavell, was born in Virginia in 1807, son of Lewis Leavell, a native of that state, who emigrated with his family to Kentucky in the early part of the last century and settled in Todd county. He started the town of Trenton in Todd county, and there he had a large landed estate and was the owner of manyslaves. His family comprised six children, the second born being Lewis Livingston.Lewis Livingston Leavell was reared on his father's plantation, where the family settled when he was quite small, and he was educated for a lawyer, in a school in New Orleans. About 1830 he located in Hopkinsville and engaged in the practice of law, which he continued for some time. Farmlife, however, had more attraction for him that did the law, and he removed to his country home. He was the largest landowner in Christian county, hada large number of slaves and dealt extensively in tobacco, shipping toLiverpool, England. For many years he took an active interest in politics, and at one time represented his county in the state legislature. He died n November, 1860. He and his wife were the parents of ten children, five sons and five daughters. The mother of this family was before marriage Miss Mary Ann Buckner. She was born in Virginia in 1812 and when a child came to Christian county, Kentucky, where she was reared. She was a daughter of Frank Buckner, a prominent early pioneer of Kentucky, he having come from Virginia to this state, where he became the owner of many broad acres and dusky slaves. She was left an orphan when a child, and was reared by her aunt, Susan Buckner. The Buckners were the oldest family in Christian county, the date of their arrival here being more than a hundred years ago.
Buckner Leavell is the youngest son in his father's family. He was reared in Hopkinsville. At the early age of seventeen years he commenced farming operations on his own account, and continued thus employed for a period of thirteen years. Then he moved back to Hopkinsville and turned his attention to the real estate and insurance business, still, however, retaining his farm, and superintending its operation up to the present time. For several years he dealt in real estate and wrote insurance, and during that time he served one term as city treasurer. He was elected city judge for a term of four years. This latter office he resigned in order to accept the position he now holds, that of steward at the Western Kentucky Asylum for Insane. Mr. Leavell married Miss Anna Monroe, daughter of Judge James Monroe, of Frankfort, Kentucky. Mrs. Leavell belongs to the same family of Monroes that furnished the United States with a president. Fraternally, Mr. Leavell is identified with a number of organizations, including Knights of Pythias, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, AncientOrder of United Workmen, and Woodmen of the World. He is also a member of the Baptist church.

The following article came from the August 17, 1939 edition of "The Central Record" of Lancaster Kentucky. It was written by Anne Burnside Brown - a noted Kentucky genealogist and historian. Although the interview which follows between William Miller and his grandson is fictional, the people, places and stories are all based on fact. Nancy Yancey, the wife of Lieut Col. William Miller, is thought to be a possible daughter of John & Mary Laton Yancey of Culpeper County, Virginia. Although the article is based on facts, it has been discovered that a few dates and places, among other things, have been proven to be inaccurate - and one should avoid using this document as proof for any genealogical information without other supporting evidence.Children of BENJAMIN LEAVELL and ISABELLA MILLER are:Ancestry: Nancy Yancey, was the daughter of John Yancey, son of Lewis Davis Yancey.
"AN EARLY FORT, AND THOSE WHO LIVED WITHIN" "Seated in front of a log fire, were grandfather and grandson. These two were chatting over the current happenings of yesteryears that had flowed into the present.
The younger man was Isaac Newton Brown, who later became illustrious as Commander Brown of Ram, Arkansas, before Vicksburg in 1862.
The older man was Lieut. Col. William Miller, who had served his country gallantly during the trying times with the Indians and British, and helped to establish this commonwealth. He was now enjoying the peace and memories that comes with old age.
"Tell me", asked his interested grandson, "something of your life and that of your family in Kentucky during the pioneer days". "I was born in Botetourt Co., Va in 1747" replied the Colonel, settling down for a long fireside story. " A vigorous man, eager for adventure, and to do my share in conquering, and settling this wilderness".
"Among all my experiences, there are two which I value most. When the Virginia Legislature provided for Col. Daniel Boone to mark a trace from Virginia to Boonesborough, Kentucky. It was my privilege to join this party that helped to mark the trace for guiding the future citizens of this state over Cumberland Gap, and into these fortifications, that were being erected for their protection. Our company was joined by Captain William Twetty and his men; making thirty in all. Col. Richard Calloway and John Kennedy were in our party.
"the company worked unmolested until we reached the headwaters of Silver Creek, when we were attacked by Indians. Captain Twetty and his negro servant were killed, and Felix Walker seriously injured. When we reached Taylor's Fork of Silver Creek we were again attacked, and one more of our number killed.
"When Col. Boone was ready to bring his wife and daughter to Kentucky I was one of the guards who helped to escort them. Mrs. Boone was the first white woman to step on Kentucky soil after the immigration began, or to stand on the banks of Kentucky River, of which Col. Boone was very proud.
"In 1776 I chose a site for a settlement on Paint Lick Creek, and raised a crop of corn. This was one of the famous salt licks and there was an abundance of cane. The Indians painted their signs along the creek banks. For this reason the two primitive words, paint and lick were combined to name this water course and settlement.
"Here I built a log fort and stockade, known as Fort Paint Lick. I was joined by many of the early settlers who resided there until it became safe to establish separate homes for themselves. Among these were Alexander Denny, William Champ, George Adams and others.
"I fought in the Northern Campaign in 1774-75. One of my worse battles was that of Little Mountain, in which Captain Estill was defeated by the Wyandotte Indians. The Indians outnumbered us". "Grandfather", interrupted Isaac Newton Brown, "Some day I would like to be decorated for bravery like you have been."
"I believe I can count on my grandson never to show the white feather if the occasion arises," said William Miller, as he continued with his story.
"In 1780 I went back to Virginia, Abingdon, and there claimed a pretty girl of Welsh parentage. She is your grandmother, Nancy Yancey, who was born in Bowling Green, Va in 1760. A brave girl who was wiling to face the hardships of this wilderness with me.
"Isabella was our first child, and first born in the fort in 1781. As you know, we had five daughters and no sons. Isabella first married Alexander Adams, and had two sons. After his death she married Benjamin Leavell. Cynthiana married John Snoddy. Susannah married Rev. Samuel Brown (your parents) and your father performed a great many marriage ceremonies in the early days. Margaret first married William McLean of Middle Tennessee. After his death she and a negro slave rode horseback from Tennessee and carried her five children to my home. Her daughter, Nancy McLean, married Samuel Campbell. Margaret married the second time, George Denny. They had two children, twins, Margaret and George. Margaret married Rice Woods. My other daughter, Betsy, died at the age of four.
"after a time I abandoned the stockade for this comfortable log house where Margaret resides. George Denny, son of Margaret, and his wife, Elizabeth Faulkner Denny, built the colonial red brick house near the log one that commands a view of this famous creek.
"I don't believe that I told you that the fort was built over a cave-like spring, which you entered by steps leading down into it.
"The Indians were a great annoyance to the settlers. There were frequent battles between Paint Lick Creek and Back Creek. It has been said that the Indians were often driven back and made to retreat at Back Creek and that is how it got its name.
"Jenny, one of the Adams girls, was killed by Thunder, and Indian Chief, in 1791. She lies in the first marked grave in the fort cemetery.
"William Mitchell, who lived nearby, went with his wife and children to visit a neighbor. On their return, when they approached their cabin, they observed the Indians at a distance fleeing in the direction of the knobs.
"They had ripped up the feather beds, scattered the feathers, and used the sacks. They were taking as much of the household and kitchen furniture as they could carry. Two horses had been left in a pen, which the Indians tried to secure, but they were wild and had escaped to the woods. Isabella Leavell's daughter, Betsy, married a son of William Mitchell.
"I have had a large acreage of bounty warrants and tried to divide liberally with my slaves, the annual products of the farm, cultivated by their labor. I am a Calvinist by belief. I have much to be thankful for. Now I am growing old, yet I have retained my physical and mental faculties. Of all my descendants each are without defect of body or mind, and of good standing in their communities. [DJY - Boonesborough, mentioned in this article, was established by Daniel Boone and others and was the second permanent settlement in Kentucky. Fort Paint Lick was in what is now, Garrard County, Kentucky. The grave markers for William and Nancy are still there in the Paint Lick Cemetery. From their headstones: "William Miller was born the 30th of March in the year of our Lord 1747. Departed this life Aug 31 1841. Rowland Gooch, son of Claiborne Gooch B @1724, M Unity West; their son Gideon Gooch, married Nancy Leavell and their daughter Mary Ann Gooch M Elijah Embry, my great-great grandparents. I would love to share any information re Claiborne's Gooch's and compare. The parents of Gideon Gooch husband of Nancy Leavell according to my research were Rowland Gooch and Unity West.(Unity West was a descendent of Lord De-La-Warr, Thomas West ist Gov. of Va.) Her parents were Nathanial West and Martha Woodard. If my research is correct,Rowland Gooch was the son of Claiborne Gooch and Mildred Thimpson. They lived in King Wm Co. Virginia, Claiborne moved with his family to Granville Co N.C. Claiborne Gooch was the son of William Gooch and Ursula Claiborne. Her family were early prominent pilgrims in America. If you care to E- mail me at jerfay@terraworld.net, I can give you further informationregarding the Gooch and Claiborne and West families back to early England. Including the information that Lord De-La Warr was responsible for Pocahantas visiting England. Lord De-la-Warr's wife was her sponsor. This information you can get from history books. After many years of research I am only to well aware that I may have an error in my data, however I have researched as thoroughly as possible, given the number of Gooch descendents.Another note: the Gooch family in England was related to the George Washington family.Washington's and Gooch's came to America and settled together. fay thole, ancestry.com message boardsChildren of NANCY LEAVELL and GIDEON GOOCH are:

LEAVELL (JOHN L., EDWARD, EDWARD, JOHN LAVELLE) was born December 27, 1774 in Culpeper County, Virginia, and died August 1854. He married CYNTHIA HEDGES May 07, 1822 in Walnut Tnshp, Pickaway Co, OH, daughter of JOSHUA HEDGES and MARY VINSONHALER. She was born November 28, 1791 in Berkely County, Virginia, and died July 18, 1834 in Ohio. (Or did she die 7 May 1822 in Pickaway Co.?) John went from KY to Ross Co. OH near Chilicothe on east side of the Scioto River at the mouth of the Scipto Creek. One year later he went to Williamsport, Pickaway Co. OH and lived there 21 years with Moses Calvin. He bought stock on Green River, KY, and grazed it in the forest of Pickaway. From 1816 to 1820, tax collector for Ross County. In 1816, bought 100 acres off Jesse McKay in Duff's Fork. In 1817, County Assessor for Pickaway County. He owned 968 acres when he died in August, 1854. A major in the War of 1812, he was present when his brother Gabriel died.
HISTORY OF FAYETTE CO., by R. S. Dills (1881), p. 922:John Leavell was born in Virginia, and served seven years in the Resolutionary War. In 1786 he started, with his family, from Culpeper County to remove to Kentucky, but stopped in Greenbrier County, where, in the winter of 1786/87, he died, and his widow, in the spring of 1787, came on to Morrison's Station, Kentucky, where her boys erected a log cabin, into which they removed. Shortly after this, the unfortunate lady was watching her elder son cutting down a tree, and imagining it would reach the cabin, in her excitement, ran under the tree, and was killed.
There were eleven children: Gabriel, Ezekial, John, Robert, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Hannah, Malinda, Sallie, Nancy, and another whose name we have been unable to obtain, who scattered at the death of their mother and began caring for themselves. Gabriel was killed at the defeat of St. Clair, in 1791, and Ezekiel and Robert settled in Henry County, Indiana.
John, our subject, was born in Culpepper County, Virginia, December 27, 1774, and came from Kentucky to Ross County, Ohio, and squatted on congress land, on the east side of the Scioto, at the mouth of Scioto Creek, a short distance above Chillicothe, where he had expected to purchase congress land, but, in the interest of speculators, these lands were offered for sale in such large lots only, that he was unable to buy, and he only remained one year, coming then to near Willisport, Pickaway County, stopping with Moses Clavin, whose house he made his home for twenty-one years, in the meantime, dealing in stock, bought on Green River, Kentucky, and which he grazed in the forest of Pickaway, and the northeastern part of Fayette Counties. He also served as tax collector of Ross, from 1816 to 1820. In 1816, he purchases about one hundred acres of land of Jesse McKay, on Duff's Fork, on which his son, Benjamin, now resides. In 1822, he married Cynthia, daughter of Joshua Hedges and Mary Vincewhellar, of Pickaway County, by whom he had nine children. At his death, which occurred in August, 1854, he owned about one thousand acres of land. His wife died in July, 1834.

Message: Unsure, but I may be as near as there is to family here. And I am distant my blood but was close to the last members of the family. Family lived in severe but impressive brick mansion house, LaVue, on R F & P railroad in Spotsylvania Va. 1875ish a stepmother appears and young son split for Indiana. Stepmother's only son, named for a Confedrate hero dies. Stepmother dies. Meanwhile young son Thomas becomes M.D. in Indiana. marries Orpha Outhouse. (name americanized from german Athaus. God knows who talked them into that move) Dr. Thomas Alsop dies about time stepmother dies. Orpha and two daughters return to Va mansion in 1915. Eldest daughter, Olive (Ca 1890-1968) marries automotive pioneer Herman Swanson (Franklin Aircooled Car) 1887-1972 live in house with Orpha who died about 1960 at great age. Younger daughter Blanche 1899-1987 married C. Fred. Hansen, president of W T Grant and lived in NYC. I have key to family mausaleum on LaVue. There is a large family group of Leavell, Amiss. Holoways, who are kin but probably not descended from "Cpt. Jack" as they called him. I do not think Blanche and Olive had Alsop first cousins but think they had Alsop second cousin some place. Blanch's will probated in NYC may mention cousins. Could try there. Why do you seek info? Can I help further?

Married Rhoda Ann Leavell in 1819, Georgia and received 80 acres of land in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, near New Site, Alabama for serving in War of 1812. Last known address Bluff Springs, Clay County, Alabama. Father said to be Richard Wallis b. abt. 1755. Any help would be appreciated.
Richard Wade Wallace was married 2 times. 1st to Nancy Cross who had children: Jefferson J. born Oct. 10, 1812 Alpinem Chattanooga, GA and married Lydia Cross.
Thomas M. born Sept. 20, 1814 and married Martha Porterfield. The tradition is that Nancy and other children died from food poisoning. No proof, only a family tradition. Richard's second wife, Rhoda Ann Leavell born Oct. 29, 1819 and died July 12, 1881 in Clay Co. AL. They had 11 children. No father listed for Richard but Rhoda's father was Edward Leavell. The info came from daughter of Ammon Y. Satterfield descendant of Richard through wife Rhoda and their child Elizabeth Caroline born in GA. and married Charles Hamilton Satterfield.
Hope this helps and I have the other children of Richard and Rhoda if you would like.

dperkins@oio.net November 17, 2000: I have looked at your website and learned a lot. I had come across some of the Levell information on genforum. The interesting thing to me is that the Levells are on my fathers side of the family and my husband is a Perkins from the Baltimore family, Richard, etc. through Moses, William, Moses and the Alabama family so we have double connections. Elizabeth Levell who married Robert Dowdy Inzer was married in Ga. as you know but came to Al. around 1855. I don't know exactly how many children she had. Two of their sons were killed in the Civil War. I have a copy of their marriage certificate. The children that I found in the Al. Census were:
Robert Whitten Inzer, b 1828, who fathered 14 children by three wives. He was a preacher.
Mary Catherine, b. 1832, who married Thomas Mitchell Hazelwood b. 1830 m. 1850
Elizabeth L. b. 1840
Edward, b. 1842
Cynthia Matilda b. 1844, d. 1924. (This is my gg grandmother) who married William Alexander Weldon. They lived in Al. and had 11 children.
The Inzers from whom Robert is descended came from Baltimore to NC, Hall Co., GA, and on to Al. Some of them were very prominent, many were preachers, one became the Lt. Gov. of Al, several were lawyers. Later many of them moved on to Arkansas and further west.
After Elizabeth died, Robert married a Mrs. Elrod and I don't know anything about her except the marriage didn't work and she went to AR to live with some of her children. Robert D. lived with his oldest son, Robert Whitten Inzer, until his death.
If you would like more details, I would be happy to mail you a packet. I don't have all of my Inzer info on computer. There is a lot of interest in the Inzer family in St. Clair Co. Al. (Ashville is county seat) where they are making a museum out of the Inzer home there. Some of the descendants are members of DAR on Robert Dowdy Inzer's fathers military record.
For some reason I haven't followed up on the Hazelwood line, but it is available at the St. Clair Co. Museum. They have a web site.
63. JOHN WILBURN LEAVELL (EDWARD FRANKLIN, ROBERT, EDWARD, JOHN LAVELLE) was born November 04, 1804 in Franklin County, Georgia, and died April 05, 1865 in Dekalb County, Georgia. He married MARY CLEMENTINE WOOD January 15, 1825 in Hall County, Georgia. She was born January 01, 1804 in De Kalb County, Georgia, and died September 15, 1892 in DeKalb County, Georgia. 1850 DeKalb County GA census in Browning's District has a John W. Level. IGI tacks on a John Wiley Leavell, but a) they already had a John, and b) he was born 21 July 1855, making his mother 51 years old! I think it's wrong.

Robert Leavell, from South Carolina, settled on Section 2 in 1808, and William Perry, from Tennessee, located himself on Section 6 at about the same time, while Robert Dickson, the father of two sons and several daughters, located himself on northwest quarter, Section 7, in 1808-09.On page 745, it was noted that Wilkson Pearson was married in 1826 to Eleanor, a daughter of Robert Leavell, a native of South Carolina, and that they had eight children, three of whom were still living.
