PHOTON
Also known as Captain Marvel. Monica Rambeau was a captain in the New Orleans
Police Department, when she had one of "those" accidents — the kind that would
kill anyone instantly in the real world, but in comic books merely induce
transformation into a superhero. She acquired the power to turn her body into
living energy, and back again, like Captain Atom or E-Man. In a riff reminiscent
of Captain Klutz's origin 15 years earlier, an incidental player in her first
adventure remarked that the captain (referring to her police rank) was a marvel,
so in media coverage of the event she was called Captain Marvel.
This time, the publisher apparently didn't aim at making the character a
headliner — they attached her full-time to The Avengers, where she assumed the
role of hero-in-training. She worked her way up from there, and in the early
1990s, served a stint as the team's leader. Today, she's a reserve member. But
she doesn't still call herself Captain Marvel. In 1995, that name was claimed by
the son of Marvel's earlier Captain Marvel. Deciding his title to it is stronger
than hers, she now calls herself Photon.
As Captain Marvel, she was a place holder — keeping the trademark current, but
not doing much else. As a supporting character, under whatever name, she seems
to be a permanent fixture in the Marvel Universe.
First Appearance: Amazing Spiderman Annual #16 (1982)

After gaining powers over light, Monica Rambeau decided to become Captain Marvel
II. She also decided to ask for help to the Avengers in order to control her
abilities. Her tenacious behaviour and hard work soon brought her to active
membership and even to leadership of the team – becomingthe first black leader
of the Avengers.
After a particularly nasty accident, she temporarily lost her powers. Her
lengthy initial membership was cut short after a near-fatal accident temporarily
deprived her of her superhuman powers. She eventually recovered and became an
active reservist. After meeting the new Captain Marvel, Monica decided to change
her name to Photon.
The name change was a welcome addition to this character and many argue she is
the most empowering female and black characters in comic books to this day. It's
still a rarity to see a black woman in comics, but hopefully that will change in
the near future.

History:
Former New Orleans harbor police office, Monica Rambeau gained her powers by
destroying a interdimensional power gird. The results of which gave her the
ability to become any form of energy.
She originally was called Captain Marvel II by the media and sought the Avengers
help in controlling her powers. She soon joined the team full time and later
became the teams chairperson.
Shortly after assuming leadership, Monica [Captain Marvel] lost her abilities in
an accident where she in electrical form came into contact with the ocean and
discharged all of her stored energy. She later discovered that her powers had
been altered by the accident and not lost. Monica's altered powers gave her the
ability of flight at supersonic speeds, super strength and a nimbus of energies
that surrounded and protected her from all physical harm. During this period,
she was called to action by the Avengers to lead a team to the Shi'ar empire to
stop war between the Shi'ar and Kree [Operation Galactic Storm]. Later she
joined other heroes to stop the Stranger from gaining the Starbrand, the
ultimate power in a parallel universe in the Starblast mini-series. It was
during this conflict that she regained her original powers.
Monica [Captain Marvel] decided to change her code name after meeting Genis son
of the first Captain Marvel, the Kree warrior Mar-vel. Out of respect for the
name and the man [Avengers Unplugged].
Most recently Photon has return to active duty in the Avenger Infinity series
and Maximum Security series. She currently is stationed at the Avengers' new
deep space monitoring base located in the asteroid belt between Mars and
Jupiter. Earth's first line of defense against any future extraterrestrial
threats.
Powers:
Photon can become any form of energy that is found in the electromagnetic
spectrum such as light, x-rays, radio waves, gamma radiation, photon particles,
and neutrinos. She can disperse this energy in the form of laser beams,
electrical blast, create holograms of herself, turn invisible, phase though any
object or substance and fly at the speed of light in her light form only.
