In early 1863, the flag that was prescribed for the headquarters of the Second Corps was a blue swallowtail flag with a white botonee cross and a red numeral "2" in the center of the flag.  All union corps flags were in this design, with the numeral designation of the corps in the center of the cross. By the spring of 1864, however,  the design was updated to include the corps insignia, in this case, the Second Corps' white trefoil.
