Speedway Control Board Referee: Mr D. Dowling
Weather was hot and sunny, the track was heavily watered and slick, there was a slight worry
for Swindon in that Martin Dixon did not turn up until approximately 7:25pm but he was there
and chipped in with some valuable points.
Coin Toss: Jesper Olsen called tails and lost, Fryer chooses gates 1 and 3 for heat 1.
Heat Details.
1.Bjarne Pedersen(67.65) Claus Kristensen, Ritchie Hawkins, Rob Grant
3-3, 3-3
Kristensen misses the gate and is stuck behind Pedersen for the race, Hawkins blows Grant
away.
2.Krister Marsh(68.46) Richard Juul, Ritchie Hawkins, James Birkenshaw
4-2, 7-5
Marsh flies out of the gate and rides a steady to hold off Juul, Hawkins cant catch after
missing the gate, better than touching the tapes though!!.
3.Andre Compton(68.21) Glenn Cunningham, Martin Dixon, Kevin Little.
3-3, 10-8
Compton gates and holds off Cunningham for 4 laps, Cunningham doesnt make any real effort
to pass him.
4.Paul Fry(Awarded) Ritchie Hawkins, James Birkenshaw, Jesper Olsen(fx)
5-1, 15-9
Fryer from the gate, looks like a man on a mission, Olsen looks like he is struggling
and just as Ritchie passes him underneath on the 2nd bend he hits a bump and heads quickly
into the fence.
5.Bjarne Pedersen(67.58) Martin Dixon, Glenn Cunningham, Rob Grant
3-3, 18-12
Tapes to flag procession, Pedersen is very quick.
6.Claus Kristensen(Awarded) Ritchie Hawkins, Richard Juul, Jesper Olsen(fx)
5-1, 23-13
Kristensen with a cracking gate, Hawkins is pressurising Olsen until he again goes down into
the second bend fence. Awarded again.
7.Paul Fry(67.90) Kevin Little, Andre Compton, Krister Marsh
3-3, 26-16
Fry is gone like a bat out of hell, Marsh cannot make an impression.
8.Bjarne Pedersen(68.24) Glenn Cunningham, Rob Grant, Ritchie Hawkins
2-4, 28-20
Tac sub Pedersen is away, Grant outgates Cunningham and holds him off for a couple of laps
but Glenno gets through to limit the damage.
9.Glenn Cunningham(68.21) Martin Dixon, Andre Compton, Richard Juul
5-1, 33-21
Glenn finally gates and takes that to the flag, Dicko and Compton indulge in a back and forth
battle of hard riding which goes the way of the Robins captain.
10.Andre Compton(68.24) Claus Kristensen, Kevin Little, Krister Marsh
2-4, 35-25
Little and Compton outgate Kristensen but Claus is right behind and tries an outside dive on
turns 3/4 - he cuts inside Little and passes but doesnt quite have the strength to carry
past compton. Marsh again shoved at the back.
11.Paul Fry(68.62) Bjarne Pedersen, Krister Marsh, Rob Grant
4-2, 39-27
Absolutely cracking race, Fryer is out of the gate and ahead of Pedersen but they are side
by side on the back straight and on turn 3/4 Fry goes wide and Pedersen cuts underneath him,
the Robins fans believe this is it but Fryer gets the run around the outside and flies back
past Bjarne, then proceeds to hold him off in a thrilling duel over the next three laps and
crosses the line marginally ahead, the Swindon fans go wild and both riders get a massive
ovation.
12.Andre Compton(69.27) Kevin Little, Ritchie Hawkins, Martin Dixon(fx) - rerun.
1-5, 40-32
Dixon is out ahead but into the second lap he goes down under pressure from Compton, the race
is rerun with the exclusion of Mad Dog and the rerun is academic, 5-1 to the diamonds.
13.Paul Fry(68.71) Claus Kristensen, Bjarne Pedersen, James Birkenshaw
5-1, 45-33
Great news for the Robins, Fry and Kristensen gate and although it is obvious that Pedersen
is a bit faster than Clausy he still doesn't manage to find a way past, redressing the balance
after the last heat - Birkenshaw in for the withdrawn Olsen.
14.Kevin Little(69.33) Richard Juul, Glenn Cunningham, Krister Marsh
1-5, 46-38
Little and Juul from the gate and Cunningham doesn't seem to be trying that hard to find a
way past.
15.Bjarne Pedersen() Paul Fry, Claus Kristensen, Andre Compton
3-3, 49-41
Bjarne is out of the gate and storms to victory to spoil Fryers maximum hopes, but Fry took
their encounters 2-1! Kristensen beats Compton by a distance..
Great match, a real ding-dong battle in the latter stages, the Robins seem to have recovered
well from their cup final fiasco. Fryer was beaten only once and Kristensen looked back to
form, if Mark and Alan had have been riding then the result could well have been a bit more
comprehensive!
Final Score : Swindon 'Soft Water' Robins - 49 Newcastle 'KBS' Diamonds - 41
