AND THE REST
These movies aren't really comedies, horrors, thrillers, actions, science fictions or kids movies.
Ali
This is the story of Muhammad Ali's
life. Only it's not really a story, just a bunch of stuff that happens. Will
Smith doesn't do too bad at talking like Good Ol' Cassius but I still thought
the movie was pretty boring.*
A Beautiful Mind
Not
bad. Not bad at all. I won't give away too much of the plot because if you
actually know what it's about before seeing it you probably won't enjoy it as
much. It has Ed Harris and that guy from A Knight's Tale (the naked guy), they
both did very well. Russell was pretty good too. He has some warts on his face
that he should get looked at, though. ***
Catch me if you can Leo you haven't aged
a day since Titanic. Chris Walken and Tommy Hanks are such good actors but they
didn't get that much screen time. So this is a Leo-flick but the kid ain't
that bad. And watching him get away with pretending to be a
doctor/lawyer/pilot is amusing. ***
Chicago
Wasn't as good as Moulin Rouge but had lots of fun singing and stuff. Good Job
guys.
Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys
Not a bad movie about a bunch of catholic school boys who find "dangerous" ways
of causing trouble. One of them has a messed up girlfriend. Sister Jodi Foster
prays for their souls. The boys also have a comic with four heroes and
evil nuns so parts of the movie are animated. The animated bits are the best. **
Devine
Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood This movie is less about the Ya-Ya sisters
and more about the problems between a mother (who's played by Ashley Judd in the
flashbacks) and a daughter (Sandra Bullock). Data's Mom's in it as on of
the ya-yas as well as that old lady from Gosford park (and every other movie
with an old lady in it). The Ya-yas solve all of Ash and Sandy's problems by
making Sandy look through a scrap book. I saw this with Omi (my grandmother) for
her "21st" birthday. I think she kind of liked it. It's a good movie to see with
Omi because she likes movies "with no war in it". My mom thought it was very
emotional but my sister and I were luke-warm about the movie. **
The Good Girl
Rachel from friends works at a store that's totally not Walmart and has an
affair with a 22-year-old. The cop from Magnolia who always play the guy with a
pretty wife who cheats on him plays Rachel's husband. Not bad. Had some funny
bits. **
Gosford Park I enjoy who-done-its but
they sure took their sweet time killing off anybody. You almost have to guess
who done it before the murder. I'll never tell BTW. Anyway this movie is set in
the 30s with a whole bunch of servants and rich snobs so it's mostly how the
different classes are treated. I know it sounds boring but there are a lot of
funny bits. Ryan Phillippe is a cutie and he gets to wear the trade-mark Gosford
Park bowler hat. ***
How to Deal What surprised me is that Mandy Moore actually wears a bra whereas in most flicks even the most big breasted woman takes off her shirt revealing nothing but boobs. But this movie is for girls, not boys, so the reason is obvious. It wasn't a completely typical schmarmy marmy girl flick which is good. **
I am Sam
Sean Penn plays a
mentally challenged father and does it really well. His kid in it (played by
Dakota Something-or-other) is really cute and not a bad actor (better than Harry
Potter anyway). There's lots of funny bits and lots of bits where they try to
make you cry (I stood my ground, I'm a tough girl). Michelle Pfeiffer's
character was a little weak but I don't think her acting was at fault. **
The Majestic Jim Carrey, a film writer in
1951, gets accused of being a commie, drives drunk off a bridge, and ends up
minus his memories in a small town where lots of boys have died in the war. The townspeople all say he looks "familiar" he
must be Luke(one of the dead-in-the-war boys). I like this movie for its old
fashioned feel. When he's not doing comedy Jimbo can still act pretty okay. I
hope I don't give away too much when I say: Jimmy, your speech at the end goes
under the heading of "preaching to the converted"; we all know about free
speech. ***
Monster's
Ball This movie is very very very slow. Halle Berry plays the wife of some
guy getting executed and Billy Bob Thorton plays the corrections officer who's
there when they fry him. So of course they end up getting together. Halle got a
best actress for this one which isn't surprising since she does the kind of
acting that people tend to get Oscars for. Also features Keath Ledger (cute guy
from 10 Things and Knight's Tale) as Billy Bob's messed up son and the old guy
who played the psychic insurance salesman on X-files as Billy Bob's racist Dad.
This movie was way too slow for me. **
Punch Drunk Love Not your average Adam
Sandler flick. This movie wasn't stupid-funny. It was weird.
So weird, in fact, that I'm not sure if I liked it. I think I do. I
don't know. It wasn't bad or anything. Just really weird. Okay I liked it.
