Enough

Directed by Michael Apted

Starring Jennifer Lopez, Bill Campbell, Tessa Allen, Juliette Lewis and Noah Wyle

Rated PG-13 for intense scenes of domestic violence, some sensuality and language

Before I actually start the review, I want to promise you that I will not make any jokes involving the word, enough. For example, there will be no joke that goes like this: About half way through the film I had really had Enough of Jennifer Lopez. Now that that’s settled, onto the review.

Domestic abuse is a serious problem here in the United States. And when something becomes a major issue in this country, it is only a matter of time before Hollywood tries to capitalize on that problem by making a movie about the issue. Just a few weeks ago, The Sum Of All Fears was released which dealt with the problem of terrorism. And like that film just a few weeks ago, Enough is truly terrible. It has almost no redeeming qualities and the few it does have are because the qualities are so stupid and ridiculous that it makes the film fun to laugh at.

This is easily one of the worst films of the years so far. And because the film is about domestic abuse, it has very few moments that rank highly on the unintentional humor scale, as you can imagine. Based on the way this film turned out, I’m surprised that Michael Apted didn’t opt for an Alan Smithee credit rather than attaching his own name to the project. The worst part is, if you have seen the trailer or any ads for the film you already know the whole story. There isn’t a single thing that they

leave out of the ads that is important to the storyline. And to me, that really cheapens the film experience, even if the movie is a piece of crap like this one. There are really only two things in this movie that make it worthwhile, Jennifer Lopez being hot and the line from Juliette Lewis about having a “divine animal right to protect your life and the life of your offspring.” That is truly one of the cheesiest lines of all-time.

Basically every single performance in this film was phoned in, and its not just because the actors chosen for the parts are bad. I’ve seen Jennifer Lopez in Out of Sight, so I know she has some acting talent. But here she is absolutely terrible. Noah Wyle is also an actor that I have previously enjoyed that I find to be ridiculously bad in this film. As for Juliette Lewis, they really should have known better than to put her in the film. I have never seen her perform well in a movie and I’m pretty convinced I never will. As for Bill

Noah: "Yes, I'll have a career suicide role in this film, please.
Jennifer: "Oh I think I'll join you."

Campbell, I haven’t seen him in a film since he starred in The Rocketeer and this wasn’t quite the follow-up performance I was looking for out of him. Very disappointing. (Note: They really should have made the planned sequels to The Rocketeer because that movie rocked). And as for Bill Cobbs, who plays the lawyer, he delivers another line that is simply priceless about how the police will not stop someone who is trying to kill you. Brilliant advice from a lawyer.

This film basically trivializes the plight of domestic abuse victims everywhere. And also it delivers the extremely bad message that the police cannot and will not help you if a spouse is abusing you and that the only solution therefore is to take matters into your own hands. Jennifer Lopez and the rest of the people who made this film should really be ashamed about the way they handled such an important topic. Like Ben Affleck and Co. two weeks ago with The Sum Of All Fears, the people involved with Enough took a serious issue and just tried to make some money out of it. This film is one of the reason that I really don’t like most commercial Hollywood films.

I’d just like to note how impressive it is that I didn’t write a single enough joke in the entire review.
