Yesterday I went to the park near the lake at about 8:30pm with my friend mishe. We were just laying on sidewalk looking at the stars when we notice some headlights in the parking lot. Then two men get out of a unnecessarily-large-texas-truck and start looking in my car with a flashlight. Then another truck pulls up and a man with a cowboy-sheriff’s hat climbs out. They start walking around looking for us with flashlights, so we walk back towards my car. The cowboy-sheriff notices us and starts talking to us.. asking for our ids and what we were doing. So we cooperate.
Next he’s asking us if we have any marijuana or narcotics on us. We answer no, because of course we don't. Then he asks if he can check my car. Apparently at this park there is a three-dollar fee that you are supposed to pay yourself, which we didn’t pay. So ya know.. ya gotta check these things out, and make sure that the reason we didn’t pay isn’t because we had to commit that money to our drug fund. So I said fine. He glanced around a little bit in it. Then after standing out in the cold for a good 15 to 20 minutes while they did complete background checks or something, he told us we could go. I can see why two teenagers with colored hair standing in the dark part of a park would be suspicious to a cowboy-sheriff… but we were there at a perfectly legal time, doing absolutely nothing wrong. I wonder if they would have backed off if I paid my 3 dollars.
It just makes no sense to me though! How can they just randomly ruin someone's evening purely based on suspicion when they didn't see us doing anything that needed checking up on? (except for the nasty 3-dollar fee avoidage, of course) Would they have done the same for a couple middle-aged folk? Shouldn’t we get some kind of brand to wear or something now that says we were checked out and quite safe to be in a public place during the legal hours, so that next time some cowboy-sheriff rolls around, we won’t have to go through that same crap?
Next time, I’ll get him to write a note. "Dear cowboy-sheriff number 2, jonelle kelly checked out just fine with cowboy-sheriff-so-and-so on such-and-such date. Just watch out for those park fees. She’s a crafty one," Because I AM crafty. And what better way to spread the word. "Signed, stupid-cowboy-sheriff-so-and-so."
