Most old VWs are obtained with no keys. The codes are located on most locks and ignition switches and keys can be made at VW dealerships or a good locksmith. Also, any VW key can be made to work as a door key. Remove the handle from the door (one phillips screw on aircooled, two on watercooled). Remove the tumbler from the door handle (one screw on back, note spring!), place the used key into the slot. Notice that on the sides of the tumbler, little bits of metal will protude. Grid them off and then put the tumbler back in the door handle. That is it, any key will work in any tumbler after the grinding is done.
*Note that the aircooled keys will not fit a watercooled tumbler and vice versa.

Aircooled handles:

1) Remove the door handle, one large phillips screw.
2) Remove lock tumbler from handle, one small phillips screw (mind the small spring). Note order of small parts to reinstall later.
3) Insert new key in lock tumbler. Notice the small metal tabs that protrude on the sides.
4) File down (grinder, dremel, hand file, etc) the protruding tabs off.
5) Put he tumbler lock back in the handle and remove the key.
6) Replace spring and small screw and handle in reverse order.

This is for the '68 and up door handles so if any of you Super owers have older doors, I'm not sure if it will work on the older handles.
