From the moment I first heard “Baby One More Time” I didn’t like her music. My opinion is this: Britney Spears cannot sing. Her voice just irritates me to no end. In my eyes, or I guess in my ears would be more appropriate, she has no vocal talent whatsoever. Now I’m no singer and to judge what’s good or bad is pretty dumb since it’s all subjective anyway, but I don’t really care so I shall continue with this commentary. Feel free to call me a hypocrite; I don’t really care about that either. Anyway, when it comes to music I am a very open-mined person and will give just about anything a listen, so it would be wrong to say I didn’t care for her music if I hadn’t heard it before. But after hearing song after song I still I fail to see how someone with such a mediocre voice can have so much popularity. I suppose it is her mere presence that has swept away the masses (not to mention her photo shoots). She’s a very pretty girl (I’d kill for her body) as well as a good dancer. It seems that’s all you really need to be a successful pop star.
Take a look at Madonna. She’s incredibly successful, but does she really have all that great of a voice? I mean, really… She’s good looking and a great dancer. It’s all about personality and attitude with her. Madonna is an “I’m going to do whatever the hell I want and I don’t give a shit what anybody says about it” kind of person. People like that. No, people love that. She took the 80’s by storm because no one else out at the time was like her. So many girls wanted to be her so bad. I have succumbed to the Madonna charm myself. No, I have never dressed up like her, but I do own her “Ray of Light” album. Up until that album came out I was never really much of a fan. I admire her and I can’t knock her for her ongoing success, but I still don’t think she’s the greatest singer in the world. But what she has on Britney are much better songs.
Next, look at Janet Jackson. I love Janet, but she’s doesn’t blow me away with her voice either. She’s another successful, beautiful woman that can dance really well. Not the strongest voice in the world, but, still has better songs than Britney. Finally, I bring up Jennifer Lopez. She is yet another successful, beautiful woman that can dance really well. Her voice is not that great at all, some would say terrible, but she remains a hit maker. People want artists that can put on a show. Nothing wrong with that, right? Well, it seems they are focusing way too much on the appearance of these women and not enough on their singing abilities. Now, take a look at the other side of this. Christina Aguilera, although she may try, is not as good a dancer as Britney Spears, but listen to her sing. She has such power in her voice. I would agree with those who say she over sings, but it still sounds better to me. It’s amazing to hear her sing. Also, Pink, not a dancer but she can sing so well. American Idol Kelly Clarkson is better. Beyoncé is pretty good as well and her dancing’s not too shabby. Maybe things are changing…
It boggles my mind how people talk about Britney as if she is the greatest singer in the world. Am I not hearing what everyone else is hearing? Someone help me out here. Explain to me what makes her so popular.
I’d like to shift gears a little here and discuss my qualms with Britney’s personality. This is where the title comes in. First we get this happy virgin I’m so innocent act. Oh come on now… You come out with a video in which you’re dressed as a sexy schoolgirl, the object of so many men’s fantasies, and you don’t see yourself as the least bit provocative? Next come cover after cover of magazines, each with you wearing fewer clothes than the last and you still don’t understand why people give it so much attention? Well it’s nice to see you’ve finally embraced your lack of innocence. We knew you cussed, we knew you smoked, we knew you drank (underage), and we knew you were having sex. It just took you a while to finally admit it. What is so wrong with admitting to being a regular human being? It’s not the fact that you did/do those things that bothers me, it’s the fact that you tried to hide it. As you would say, “that’s retarded.” Will you just please be real? So Diane Sawyer made you cry. There’s nothing wrong with that. People cry sometimes. It’s okay. Ya know, you’re kind of like Michael Jackson. You live in this little bubble apart from the rest of the world. You do what you do and don’t understand why people make such a big deal out of it. Hello! You’re a celebrity! Or haven’t you noticed that yet?
One the other hand, why should we make a big deal out of it? Why am I taking time out of my day to write about Britney? Boredom I suppose. Lack of a life for sure. Jealousy? Certainly not. I’m not coming down on her success. I can’t hate on a person that is so incredibly popular. It just that I don’t get it. That voice… I’m sorry, but I can’t take it. I have to change the station when she comes on. Sure, that works for a moment, but what am I to do when she’s on the cover of my issue of Entertainment Weekly? I can’t help but think, “What the hell did she do now?” Oh, she got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Someone please tell me why? She’s been around for only five years and she already gets a star? Who’s next, Kelly Osbourne?
Okay, so I probably can’t even put into words how much I am confused by Britney Spears’ massive celebrity and I probably will never understand it. To put more time into trying to figure it out would be pointless, so I will stop here. But you all do get me, right? I do make SOME sense don’t I?
BOTTOM LINE: Britney Spears cannot sing, yet is so popular. Why? It’s like asking how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop. The world may never know…
