Kamiya Kaoru was the proud daughter of the creator of Kamiya Kashin Ryuu. She was raised with the teachings of her fathers principles of Kamiya Kashin Ryuu. Thus becoming the way she is now.
Kaoru seems to take a thing towards Kenshin in the anime. Her Bushido is weak and she is a weak fighter compared to any of the JupunGatana, though she did beat Kammatari with the help of Misao. Anyways, aside from that Kaoru is a funny character who seems to have a unique touch about her. She is basically the driving force behind Himura Kenshin. Ever hear the quote "Behind every man there is always a woman" thats very true in this case. I cannot picture Kenshin without the help of Kaoru. I don't think he would be able to learn the Ougi without Kaoru. So don't belittle her importance.
