Saitoh Hajime is a survivor of the Bakamatsu and was art of the ShinshenGumi a natural enemy to the Ishinshishi. Saitoh Hajime was the thrid captin of the ShinshenGumi and he led them with his only motto "auku, suku, zan." 10 years ago the conflicting interest between the ShinshenGumi and the revolutionary Ishinshishi had an all out war in the city of Kyoto there Saitoh and Kenshin had a fight that was unfinished to this day it is still unfinished. Saitoh plans to finsih the fight at all costs.
Saitoh Hajime is one of the coolest dark hero type characters. His motto aku, soku, zan is what he lives and dies for. His attitude helps add a perspetive to the situations and help provide another view aside from Kenshin's philosphy. His reactions with Sanosuke are quite funny and help build Sanosuke as a character. His attitude is what makes him popular and really helps add another spin to Kenshin. I don't think I would enjoy Kenshin as much if all the views were from Kenshin's philosphy. Saitoh's standpoint on issues add something more and helps tell two sides of a situation.
Saitoh has some of the most ruthless antics to the Kenshin series and has many quotes that are memorable because of how they make Saitoh's personality appear. For example, Saitoh has said that he can not drink sake because it gives him the urge to kill. He also was asked how long is he goig to follow his motto aku, soku, zan in the new meiji era, his response..."Till I die, of course." Also in the Kenshin OAV's Saitoh has an unbelivable sense of smell when walking through the streets of Kyoto with fellow ShinshenGumi members, he mangaed to pick up the scent of blood. These type of things is why I like Saitoh.
