When Sanosuke was a child he was a part of the Sekihoutai. THe Sekihoutai was a volunteer rmy that wanted to help bring an era of freedom and ideas. There boss was called Sagara Souzou, this is where Sanosuke got his last name. One day the Sekihouti was told to spread false information to gain support of the Ishinshishi the army used this to betray them. The Sekihoutai were betrayed by the higher ups and elimainated on the spot. Luckily Sanosuke was saved by Souzou but in return Souzu was shot to death.
He then went to Tokyo where he trained and taught himself how to fight where he earned the nickname Zanza.
Sagara Sanosuke is one of my favourite characters. When you first meet Sanosuke it's him fighting Kenshin with a big ass sword known as the Zanbatou. This sword was used for killing men off horses and as you see Sano is using it in a regular fight. Sano's past is a tragic past that helps develop him as a turly great character. Without the experience of his tragic past Sanosuke would not be who he is today. His ideals get in the way of his priorites and clouds whats right from whats wrong which is extremely interesting to see. These scene's really build Sanosukes character and are some of the most interesting scene's to see.
