Soujirou's mother was a prostitue. She had conceived Soujirou with a man who owned a rice distrubution comapany. Soujirou was treated badly by his father and his family. They worked Soujirou hard, and they would beat him to the point where he would just smile instead of crying. One day he witnessed a bandaged man(Shishio Makoto) kill three police officers. Soujirou tried to escape but stepped on a twig alerting Shishio. Frightened that he would kill him Soujirou began to smile. Shishio offered to let him live if he would get him some bandages and food. After several days Shishio finds out about his family beating on him. Shishio then tells Soujirou his motto "The strong survive and the weak die" Shishio then gives him a Kodachi. Soujirou's family finds that all the bandages are missing and remebers that the wanted criminal was wrapped om bandages. The family concludes that Soujirou is hiding Shishio and decide to kill him for a reward. Soujirou's family begins to chase him so he heads for the place where he hid the Kodachi. Someone discovers Soujirou only to get slaughtered by him. The family hearing the scream figured that Soujirou had been killed, but when the family sees Soujirou crawl out covered in blood they are shocked and then slaughtered. As Soujirou stood in the rain, Shishio who was in the warehouse the whole time asked Shishio if he was crying. Soujirou replies with a no and then joins Shishio becoming the strongest of the JupponGatana. Later in the series you find out that Soujirou was actually crying in the rain.
Seta Soujirou is one of my favourites to Ruruoni Kenshin. Truly an original character with many twist and surprises. His past is real and explains many things about him in the present. Although his past traumatized him greatly, it did not go in vain, his harsh working conditions lead him to aquite a god like speed and the ability to contain emotions. His speed alone surpasses HitenMisturugiRyu making him the fastest character out of the entire Ruruoni Kenshin series unless Hiko Seijirou is faster. His whole killing technique revoles around his speed making him the perfect assasin. I enjoy Soujirou's character so much because of the surprises he threw at me. Who knew that the fight at the village was only the beginning. To see his god like speed was quite surprising and made him even better. Truly a great character.
