| Rurouni Kenshin opens with a story from the past. During the Meiji Revolution Japans civil war of the 1860's a assassin knowen as the Hitokiri Battosai haunted the streets of Kyoto, gruesomely dispatching officials of the Tokugawa regime on behalf of the rebellious Satsuma and Choshu clans. In those days, the Battosai had been unstoppable in combat. As soon as the rebel clans toppled the old regime, however, the Battousai mysteriously disappered. Jump forward 11 years to 1870's Tokyo. A young swordswoman named Kaoru Kamiya is hunting the Battousai, who has apperently come out of retirement to murder people in the streets- in a way that mimics her schools unique swordfighting style. Determined to clear her school's name, she attacks a sword wielding drifter one night, but her victim turns out to be a homeless guy carrying a harmless reversed bladed sword. His name is Kenshin Himura. Soon enouph, the real killer appears, and Kaoru quickly realizes that she has bitten more then she can chew, The drifter from before suddenly comes to her aid, howeverm revealing that he is, in fact, the real Battousai, and that Kaoru's opponent is nothing more then a disgruntled student that her father humiliated years ago. Thus the friendship between Kaoru and Kenshin. Kenshin is a gentle mam with a cross shaped scar on his cheek. When asked why he carries a reversed blade sword, he simply replys thatm a long time ago he too an oath to never kill again |
