The Yankees are definitely my favorite team.  From some of the great sluggers of the mid 1900's to the great Yankee pitching staff of 1998, to the pretty good pitching and offense in 2001 (it couldn't last forever) the Yankees have mostly been a team of GREATS.  Players such as Babe Ruth, Joe Dimaggio, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, and Roger Maris made the team famous.   Players such as Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Mariano Rivera, Mike Mussina, and Jason Giambi keep the team this way.

Some notable players who have left in the past few years and will be missed: David Cone, Graeme Lloyd, Joe Girardi, Jeff Nelson, Paul O'Neill, Tino Martinez, Chuck Knoblauch, David Justice, Strawberry and Luis Sojo.

The New York Yankees are my favorite team and I think I've always been a fan.  They not only have won the most World Series in major league baseball history, but they have won the most by a very wide margin.  They are undoubtedly the most successful sports franchise in history.  In this past year, 2001, they narrowly missed yet another championship.

By the way, Cal Ripken Jr., one of the best shortstops and all around one of the greats retired at the end of the 2001 season at the end of September.
